How Difficult is Installing a Brake Controller for a 2005 Chevy Suburban and What Parts are Needed

Updated 05/15/2020 | Published 07/24/2008

Question:

I have a 2005 chevy suburban with a factory installed tow package and pull a 2001 19 timberland trailer. I do not recall having any additional wiring provided by chevy. Can I purchase a brake controller from you and install myself? will it contain all necessary components/wires to install? OR do these have to installed by certified professionals?

Since you have the factory tow package, the installation will be simple. You will need a brake controller and a wiring adapter to plug the controller into the vehicle, provided that your factory tow package includes a 7-Way. I would suggest the Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90185 and adapter part # 3015P. Which is the brake controller and the wiring harness to plug into the port.

We also have a how to page that I have linked below that describes the installation in detail. After reading the web page, you should have a pretty good idea whether or not this is something you would feel comfortable doing yourself.

How difficult is it to install a controller and wire harness on a 2012 chevy suburban? Can you give me the correct part numbers? Thank you.

If your 2012 Suburban has the factory 7-Way installing a brake controller is pretty straight forward. The 2012 model doesn't have a factory plug/port like mentioned above, but all the wiring is already ran under the dash. So it's just a matter of splicing 4 wires together to the factory harness - the pigtail from the controller like the Prodigy P2 # 90885 to the wiring under the dash.
