High Capacity Hitch for Thor 31-Foot Class C Motorhome Built on 2002 Ford E450 Chassis
Published 01/18/2018 >
Question:
My 31foot Thor class C RV 2002 Ford E450 chassis cab currently has a Reese 36041 class III hitch which is not rated to pull our new trailer. I need to get a class IV or V hitch for the new trailer due to tongue weight and GTWT. What do you recommend as a replacement?

We do offer options in both Class IV and Class V hitches, shown on the linked page, that fit the base Ford E450. I contacted Thor Motorcoach to try to confirm the net towing capacity of your 2002 Class C built on a 2002 Ford E450 cab and chassis, but since there are several series and multiple models of Class C made on that same platform Thor needs the VIN in order to confirm the actual net towing capacity of any given vehicle. It is possible your Thor owner's manual will indicate this but I urge that you verify the vehicle capacity before installing the new hitch.
Thor's own installed equipment could affect the tow rating due to its weight and/or affect the ability to install a specific hitch due to reduced access to the frame mounting points. In order to know for certain that your motorhome frame has the net towing capacity you need for the trailer you want to tow, I recommend contacting Thor with your RV's VIN to make certain it can tow the weight of your trailer.
It can happen that a host vehicle will have more or less trailer towing capacity than the particular aftermarket hitch you might install on it. In this case the lower-rated item (coach or hitch) always determines the actual available towing capacity.
Of the four hitches we offer two are no-drill installs and two require drilling. The highest-rated among them is the Class IV/V Draw-Tite Ultra Frame hitch # 41945,. This 2-inch hitch is rated for 1500-lbs of trailer tongue weight and 10,000-lbs of gross trailer weight. On a compatible vehicle this hitch is a no-drill install.
