Question:
How can I increase the cross bar load on my 2017 Ford Edge from the current 165lbs maximum to 500lbs? Is there an option to attach the rails and crossbars directly to the roof chassis frame?

Expert Reply:
The crossbar weight capacity for a roof rack on your 2017 Ford Edge like the 165 lb maximum capacity of the rack consisting of:
Vortex crossbars # RRVA137B-2
Leg kit # RRRLKVA
Fit kit # DK432
This roof rack (and all other roof rack options in the attached link) is based on the manufacturer's rated roof weight capacity. There is no way to increase this to 500 lbs as it is already utilizing the strength of the roof frame to gain the 165 lb capacity. It should also be noted that many roof mounted accessories will further limit your carrying capacity.
You would need a truck with a ladder rack system to gain a 500 lb capacity for crossbars.
