You will want to install the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 119250KIT for wiring on your 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350.
This product draws power from the 12V lead that is run to the battery and then sends a signal to the trailer connector once it detects that your light functions are being utilized. It does not require anything to be recalibrated on any vehicle that it is installed on. I confirmed this with my contact at Tekonsha.
I have attached a sample installation video of this harness on a 2013 BMW X5 so you can get a general idea of how it installs. Be sure to use the included circuit tester to verify the correct wires for installation as wire colors can vary between vehicles.
If you do not yet have a trailer hitch installed then I recommend going with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13411 which is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver opening. Please note that for any non-trailer loads you will need to use a Support Strap # 18050 to comply with the Curt warranty.
Should you be using this setup for towing you will also need a ball mount and a hitch ball. The etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit # 989900 is a great option that comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. You will want to check out the attached article on ball mounts to make sure that this is compatible for your towing application though.
I have also attached an installation video of the Curt trailer hitch as well as a review video on the ball mount kit for you to reference.
