Do Both Power Wires of Atwood Carbon Monoxide Detector Have to Be Ran

Question:
Part number AT36681 LP and Carbon Dioxide detector. Description indicates there is a second 12 Volt wire for connection to a back-up battery. Is it necessary to hook-up this wire or can it just be hooked up to only the main battery and still function correctly?

The second power wire for the # RS94FR does not have to be completed for it to function but it really is a good idea to run it to a secondary battery so that in the event of a primary battery failure the secondary battery will allow it to function and potentially prevent you from not realizing you are in danger.
