Expert Reply:
For the 2011 Ford F-150, all of the 5th wheel trailer hitch options currently available use above the bed rails. While these rails will raise up from the bed surface 1.15 inches. With a trailer weight 12,000 pounds and a pin weight of 1,500 pounds, you can use a 15k or 16k hitch.
I also recommend going with a custom installation kit because they install much easier and in less time than universal kits. For your truck, I recommend the Curt Sliding 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, 16k, # 16516, and custom installation kit, # C16441-104. I have included a link to the installation details for both the hitch and the install kit for you to view.
