Current federal motor vehicle safety standards require manufacturers of lightweight trailers (under 10,000 lb.) to display the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on an ID plate or a sticker-type decal. This is typically located inside one of the frame rails near the front of the trailer. On older trailers, the VIN may be stamped or etched into the trailer frame itself or engraved on a small metal plate. On campers or livestock trailers like yours, the VIN is almost always found on the trailer tongue. Check under any spare tire mounts or other accessories that are mounted on the trailer tongue. You may need to use a wire brush like # DW00254 to remove any rust or grime that may be covering the numbers. If you are still unable to locate the VIN, the trailer manufacturer may be able to help you - if they are still in business. If that is not an option and your VIN decal is missing or illegible, the state can issue a new VIN number.

The process for getting a new VIN number will depend on your state. It is usually similar to getting a VIN number for a homemade trailer. Check with your state's department of revenue (DOR) or department of motor vehicles (DMV) online for the process in your state. You will most likely need to complete an application for a title and license, so you may need a bill of sale (or other proof of ownership), the trailer weight and any state-required safety inspection. In some states, the State Highway Patrol conducts the trailer inspections and will verify the weight of the trailer.

I recommend using a vehicle organizer like # RA769501 to keep track of your trailer registration, tire pressure gauge like # 17-582, circuit tester like # ALL640595, spare fuses and other tools. Order one now so that you will have a safe place to store your documention once it is obtained. You can keep it in the glove box of your vehicle or in the trailer itself.
