If your 2006 Ford Escape came with the tow package then all you will need to do is plug the Plug-N-Tow (R) Vehicle Wiring Harness # 40455 in the connector located near your rear bumper (see attached installation video).
If your Escape did not come with a tow package then you will need to use a harness and connector kit that needs to have the hot lead run to the battery to prevent failure of the lights on your Escape. If the trailer is drawing more power than the lights on the Escape can supply then you will start to experience lighting issues. The hot lead will draw power directly from the battery and will activate the trailer lights when the Escape's lights are activated. I recommend using the Tekonsha T-One # 118426 as they are the most reliable company when it comes to electronics. We have a video of the T-One being installed on a 2006 Escape that you can use as a reference.
