Can the Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit # FHDPB330301 be Installed at 48 Inches on a 1200 Lbs Trailer

Question:

Your Fulton hinge model FHDPB330301 notes a maximum hinge distance of 34, however, the same model number from Fulton diagrams indicates a 48 maximum hinge distance at 2600 # GVW. My trailer is rated and 1200# and it is only carrying a 700# dinghy. We will be well under the 2600# limit at 48. I also have a hitch for my Subaru to order from you and would like to combine the items if it is the correct hinge for the small trailer I have, But, am confused by the differences in hinge distance and weight ratings??

You are correct the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3 x 3 inch Tongue, item # FHDPB330301, can be installed at 48 inches. This is the Maximum recommended installation point for this fold-away hinge.

When installed at 48 inches back from the tongue, the gross trailer weight can be up to 2600 pounds and the trailer tongue weight can be up to 260 pounds. You should verify both of these weights, with the trailer fully loaded and ready to tow, before installing the fold-away on your trailer, for safety.

I have posted a chart, see photo link at right,showing the GTW, TW and Maximum Pivot Length for the # FHDPB330301 fold-away. You should always install the fold -away at the shortest possible location for your application.
