For your 1997 Chevrolet 1500 truck, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness, # 41125. This harness will quickly install on your vehicle using a simple T-connector to plug into your OEM wiring. You will not have to cut or splice into your existing wiring.
I also recommend using dielectric grease, # LT37534, when installing this wiring harness. Just a apply a small amount in each of the harness's plug end prior to installation. The grease will help prevent electrical shorting and will seal out contaminants like water from entering the harness's plugs.
