Does Trailer Tire Size 4.80-12 have Higher Speed Rating than 4.80-8

Published 03/17/2017

Question:

Going on a extended trip this spring with my motorcycle trailer. Right now it has 4.8x8 tires and wheels on it. Just want to be safe at interstate speeds and wondered if the 4.8x12 would serve me better. I have over 3 inches of fender space so that should no be a problem.

Taskmaster has a tire in the size of 4.80-12 that has a speed rating of 81 mph which would be more than enough. You can get this with the Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire - Load Range C Item # TTWSF48012C and then have it mounted on a Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel - 12" x 4" Rim - 4 on 4 - White Powder Coat
Item # AM20122

If you have the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, you have several choices like the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel w/ Offset - 12" x 4" - 5 on 4-1/2 - White Item # AM20149 for an example.

All of the tire and wheel combos that are already mounted in your size only have a 65 mph speed rating. If you purchase tires and wheels separately, you can have them mounted at a local shop.
