Can 2016 Chevy Trax Hatch be Opened with a Trunk Mount Bike Rack Installed

Question:

I am planning on purchasing a bike rack today for a trip in a couple weeks and want to know if the hatchback of a 2016 Chevy Trax be opened when the bike rack is on?

Trunks/hatches cannot be opened with a trunk mount bike rack installed. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, the hinges on the trunk/hatch are not designed to support extra weight so it could fall unexpectedly.

And second the hooks of bike racks are meant to fit into gaps between the hatch and vehicle body when the hatch is closed. If you open the hatch on your 2016 Chevy Trax the dimensions of the gaps changes. This can cause the much thicker metal of the bike rack hooks to deform the metal on the vehicle. I've seen it happen. And the process of opening and closing the hatch could cause something to come loose and result in loss of bike rack.

If you anticipate needing to get into the cargo area of the vehicle often while the bike rack is installed then I have an alternative solution. You can install Curt Class I trailer hitch # C11527 and then use the Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount# TH903202. This bike rack tilts way out with or without bikes loaded allowing you to open the rear hatch. Most tilting racks require you to remove the bikes to tilt the rack out of your way. I have included a link to a video showing how it works. I have also linked a video showing how the hitch installs.
