Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 2011 Ford Mustang V6 Convertible

Updated 11/29/2010 | Published 11/25/2010

Question:

I am searching for a trailer hitch and wiring harness for my 2011 Ford Mustang V6 convertible. Is there a wiring harness available that does not require a wire from the battery? I have had wiring harnesses before that just plugged into the tail light wiring without a wire from the nbattery. Thanks.

For your 2011 Ford Mustang Convertible, you can use Curt Trailer Hitch, # C11048. This trailer hitch comes with the required ball mount and you can use ball # 19256 (1-7/8 inch diameter) or # 19258 (2 inch diameter). If you plan on ever using the hitch for a non-trailer load like with a bike rack or cargo carrier, Curts warranty requirements state that for their class I and II hitches, you must use a stabilizing strap like # 18050.

For trailer wiring, you will need to use the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118487, that you have referenced. This kit does have a power wire that needs to be run to the battery. The reason for this is that your Mustang has a 2 wire system with LED tail lamps. The LEDs draw much less power than incandescent bulbs. Because of this the wiring in the electrical system is smaller and not able to handle the additional power draw from trailer lights.

With a powered converter attached directly to the battery, the trailer lights receive most of the power from the vehicle battery instead of the tail light wiring. This protects the Mustang sensitive wiring. The use of a non-powered converter would result in the trailer lights not working and could result in damage to the electrical system of the Mustang. I have included a link to the installation details for this wiring kit below. A couple of tips I can offer is that when installing the wiring, if you route it under the vehicle, make sure to avoid areas that may pinch or burn the wiring (like suspension and exhaust components). I have also included a link to the installation details for the trailer hitch.
