Can an Enclosed Trailer Roof Support an 68 Pound Advent Air RV Air Conditioner

Updated 08/30/2016 | Published 08/29/2016

Question:

This unit weighs 88 lbs., will a standard 14 1/2inch x 14 1/2inch tubed vent opening carry that weight on the roof of my enclosed trailer?

The AC unit # ACM150BCH is designed to fit 14-1/2" long x 14-1/2" wide openings like yours. The weight is not likely an issue unless the roof is damaged from dry rot or something else. Or if there isn't adequate support beams along the ceiling.

Not all of the weight will be over the opening. The unit will overhang the opening by 18-1/2 inches lengthwise (a little less at the bottom) and 12 inches widthwise. So the total weight will be dispersed over a larger area than 14-1/2 by 14-1/2.

If there is a lack of support then I recommend reinforcing all sides of the opening. On an enclosed trailer there can be only cross beams in the roof. I would run 2 support pieces between the cross beams (front to back) where the hole will go.
