I have a 2016 Kia Sorento that has side rails and cross bars. The problem is I wouldnt be able to attach the carrier to the side rails as there is no space to run the strap under the rails. If I used the under mat, would the carrier be secure just using the cross bars?

Using the crossbars to secure Rightline cargo bag # RL100S20 is actually more stable than using the side rails; especially during starts and stops. The protective pad # RL100650 will also help to keep the bag in place while protecting the roof of your 2016 Kia Sorento at the same time.
Another accessory I recommend is a tire step, # ALL647596. The use of a tire step is safer than standing on the floor in an open vehicle doorway.
