Will a Circuit Tester Trick Brake Controller into Showing Connection to Test for Output Circuit

Updated 04/25/2016 | Published 04/21/2016

Question:

I have a 2016 Toyota Tundra with an integrated brake controller. When I test the 7 pin connecter, I cant get the LED light to go on for the electric brake connection when the brake is applied. I take it thats because the brake controller is not connected to a trailer with electric brakes the dash says No Trailer Connected. Will this tester fool the truck so that readings can be made. Thanks,

Normally a circuit tester puts enough load on a brake output pin to allow it to think that a trailer is connected. But if yours is saying no trailer connected while testing yours it's not going to apply any voltage. You might try the manual override of the controller as that still may work.

But that being said, your truck is brand new and I am sure the controller is working fine (assuming nothing happened to it) so I would just try connecting to a trailer and see if it works. I would be very surprised if it didn't.
