Can AC to DC Adapter be Connected to Tekonsha Battery Charger Running to Trailer Battery

Published 11/10/2015

Question:

I am building a cellular car kit into a pelican case. My plan is to have several 12v devices in the case cigarette lighter outlet, usb charging ports, etc. I have an AC to DC adapter that will give me 12v 10amps inside the case, but I would like to have a sealed lead-acid battery inside the case for when I am not able to plug in. Here is my question: How can I run the 12v devices off the 12v 10amp AC DC adapter when plugged into a wall outlet, while charging the battery with the Tekonsha? Thanks for your help, look forward to hearing from you.

The 12 volt devices that are connected to the battery are going to draw power from the battery whether plugged into the charger (which is plugged into the AC/DC adapter) or not. When the charger and adapter are plugged in the devices will draw power from the battery while the charger provides a charge at the same time.

For the devices to draw power directly from the AC/DC adapter they would have to be connected to it separately and directly and they would still draw from the battery as well if left connected to the battery.

The Tekonsha charger # 2024-07 would not work because it is rated for a maximum 2 amps input. There is a charger that is designed more for this application than other chargers, # 331-BCDC1240D. It has a 12 volt input and a solar panel input and output to a battery.
