What Holds the Reese Adapter for Ram Trucks Factory Prep Package In Place

Updated 09/28/2015 | Published 09/27/2015

Question:

How does the mounting pins stay locked in by just turning a quarter turn then installing the unit on top of that. Is there no force on the little pin that locks it in...it wont just shear off and pop up and off the truck when hitched...or does the weight of the trailer apply enough force that nothing will happen...I ask this because the other truck of mine is bolted in not just sitting on pins

The pins that hold the Reese adapter # RP30154 to the Ram's 5th wheel prep package pucks are large, 1 inch diameter T-pins which are more than strong enough for the 20,000 pound capacity. And there are even more heavy duty T-pins included that take the capacity to 25,000 pounds. I included a picture of the assembly for you.

The handles attached to the T-pins turn, to turn the pins (4), to lock the adapter in place. The handles are held in place with smaller lynch pins but those small pins aren't what hold the hitch to the truck bed.

The pin weight of the trailer does certainly help hold everything down so vertical force is not a concern and the T-pins can handle the horizontal pull so shearing is not going to be an issue either (provided you are towing a trailer that is within the adapter's capacity).

We have yet to hear of any customers who had a problem with the adapter not being up to the task. Considering the forces at work, the adapter was engineered to handle the rigors of heavy duty towing.
