Question:
I have an older hayes enegize III.I have the correct wiring harness for a 2013 Ram.The adapter harness has a red wire that goes to the stop lamp on the top of the truck.Does that wire have to be connected to the stop lamp for the controller to work? Is there a connection under the dash that I can hook the red wire into?Running the red wire to the stop lamp is a bit of trouble. Thanks

For your 2013 Ram 1500 you would not be able to use your older Hayes brake controller and your truck can only work with newer controllers that can interpret the multi-plexed brake light signal on your vehicle.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
To install the controller you will need the install harness part # 3023-P. I attached an install video that shows how it will install in a 2013 Ram just like yours.
