Boosting Towing Capacity of 2006 Ram Mega Cab

Updated 07/16/2015 | Published 07/15/2015

Question:

I have looked at all of the charts and it looks as if I can only tow about 12 thousand pounds with my HUGE truck. Everyone I talk to is shocked. I should have done more research I guess but If these figures are correct then I have a HUGE truck with not very good capacity. The big problem is that a lot of the newer 5th wheelers are so heavy that this truck simply wont pull them.... or will it? I have just got to think that this truck can pull much more. If I am wrong then so be it. I bought the 2006 because I didnt like the idea of the DEF problems I have heard about but maybe that was a mistake also. Its automatic transmission and 3.73 gearing are the only two things that I can see that would improve the figures. Again... is this wrong? Other than chipping the engine is there anything else I can do? And I know that none of this will improve how much i can STOP with this rig. Appreciate your feedback.

The 12K towing capacity sounds about average for a heavy duty truck. For instance, the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD towing capacity ranges from 9300 to 14,700 lbs,

Your average 5th wheels weigh in around 12K, however you are correct that some can be much heavier.

To determine the towing capacity of your Ram, you need to know the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), which is the curb weight of the vehicle plus the weigh of passengers, cargo and gas, and the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCVR) which is the maximum amount that your vehicle plus the trailer can weigh. If you subtract the GVW from the GCVR, the result will be a close approximation of the maximum trailer weight your vehicle can safely tow.

The GCVR and GVW are typically listed on a sticker or plate attached to the vehicle in the door jamb on the drivers side door. Your owners manual might have additional information regarding your tow capacity.

There are no kits that will increase a vehicle towing capacity.
