I just purchased the 1002 for my Chevy Malibu yet the foot pad positions are too short to reach the doors. What am I doing wrong?

The # SR1002 is a semi-custom roof rack that has your 2010 Chevy Malibu listed as a fit. Semi-custom fit racks don't always fit the best unfortunately since they are designed to fit as many vehicles as possible.
You might need to space the foot pads out further to get the clamps to reach the doors.
Or for a custom fit rack that wouldn't give you the troubles the Sportrack is giving you the part numbers # RRVA126B-2, # RRRLKVA and # DK183 together form a custom fit rack for your vehicle that I can assure you will fit better.
