Tongue Weight Capacity Changes When Trailer Tongue Hinge Kit Is Installed

Updated 05/14/2015 | Published 05/13/2015

Question:

There has been no mention of the length of tongue to the rear of the hinge. Why is the length of tongue forward of the hinge so critical yet the aft end length behind the hinge apparently not important.

Trailer tongues have a specific capacity based on their length. When you use a hinge kit like part # FHDPB330301, it does change the capacity of the tongue significantly due to the leverage placed on the attach bolts. For that reason Fulton has created a chart that shows how much of the tongue weight capacity is lost when you install the hinge kit.

I have attached a drawing of the chart that has the weight capacity listed depending on the placement of the hinge and pivot point. I have also attached a drawing that shows where you measure to determine this distance.

The chart shows the capacity of the entire tongue after the hinge has been installed, depending on the measurement shown in the drawing. The weight capacity listed is not just for the portion of the tongue in front of the hinge pivot point. I called my contact at Fulton and they said the weight capacity for the trailer aft of the hinge does not change.
