2-Bike Hitch Rack Recommendation for Use on 2008 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Motor Home

Question:

I have a 2008 Pleasure Way Ascent 2500 mercedes sprinter with rear mounted tire support over left rear door. Requires minimum of 11inch clearance for bikes, unless there is vertical rear tire mount set-up available. Need to be able to open easily the right rear door, and support 2 bikes. Including pictures.

Thank you for including a photo of your 2008 Sprinter-based RV which appears to have a 2-inch Class III hitch installed. This hitch is great for using a bike rack, but your rear-mounted spare tire poses some challenges for a bike rack fit. What I suggest you do is measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear-most part of the spare tire cover to determine how much clearance you need from a carrier. The linked article explains this simple process.

If the 11-inch measurement you mentioned is the hitch-pin-to-spare-tire distance then this tells us you need a substantial 12-inches of clearance from a bike rack.

We do have a bike rack from Let's Go Aero, their BikeWing # LGA54FR, that provides 12 inches of clearance from the hitch pin hole to the upright bars. This rack will clear your spare tire cover but the nature of your particular bikes will be important too since wide handlebars, for instance, may make contact with your van's rear door. Also, please note that this rack does NOT tilt or swing away from the vehicle for rear door access.

There is no one carrier that both tilts or swings away from the vehicle AND gives you the required clearance.
