Video Transcript for Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails Kit Installation - 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Reese Quick Install Custom Installation Kit with Base Rails for fifth wheel trailer hitches, part number RP50074-58.Here's what our rails look like once we have them installed. This is going to allow us to put a fifth wheel into the bed of our truck and hook up to our fifth wheel trailer. As you can see here, our rails are going to fit most industry standard fifth wheels like we have here with our Reese. As you can see, our rails are going to stick up about an inch from the bottom of the truck bed, but when we take out fifth wheel out we'll have full bed access to store everything we need. If your Ford doesn't have the factory prep package in it, this is going to be a great way to get a fifth wheel in the bed of your truck. With Ford moving to aluminum truck beds, having two dissimilar metals can cause corrosion.

Well in our kit they're going to provide us with a strip for every piece of steel that's going to contact the aluminum to prevent that corrosion from happening. All the pieces of steel in our kit are going to have a black powder coat finish, so they're going to resist scratches, rust and corrosion. Our kit is custom designed for our Super Duty and it's going to use existing holes in the frame, so we're not going to have to drill at all into the frame. Now some of our customers did have some trouble getting these spacers in above these frame brackets. It is a little bit challenging to get them in there, but other than getting those spacers in it is really straightforward. The whole kit is going to go in with just about 15 bolts.

They even label the brackets for us so we know which side they go on. Now that we've seen what it looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation we went ahead and removed our spare tire so we have a little bit more headroom when working underneath. Our vehicle doesn't have the plastic wheel well liners, but if yours does you're going to need to pull those out as well on both sides. Then we're going to grab one of our rails and we're going to lay it upside down on our tailgate. We're going to grab the plastic strip that comes in the kit, and since the bed is made of aluminum we want to make sure this is anywhere that any steel is going to be touching it.

You can see there are going to be kind of precut holes in there, so we want to line it up on the edge so that the holes will line up. We'll take the backing off, and then we're going to apply it directly to the bottom of the rail. You just kind of want to slowly take the backing off as you go. Once we have it all the way on, we'll go back and we're going to press it down and make sure it adheres all the way. We'll repeat that for the other side of the rail and the other rail itself. At this point we're going to need to measure where we're going to put our rails.

We're going to hook the end of our tape measurer on the very back edge of the bed and we'll find the measurement in our instructions. I'm going to make several marks going across the bed so I can line my rail up. Next we're going to measure the width in between the wheel wells here so we can find our center point. Now you may want to go close to where you made your marks, make it a little bit easier on yourself. Once we measure it, we'll find the center point and mark that out. We're going to set out rail, we're going to set it in the truck bed so that the back edge closes to the tailgate lines up with those marks that we made. Now we're also going to want to line up the center hole with that center mark that we made as well. Now it's not a bad idea to go ahead and double check your side to side measurement. This way we just measure from the bed rail to the rail and make sure that measurement is the same. With our rail in position we're going to want to drill a pilot hole. We're going to be drilling both of the very outer holes as well as both the center holes. We're going to take about an 1/8 inch drill bit and we're going to go right down to the center and makr the location. I'm just going to drill a little bit so it leaves a mark. Then we can move the rail and drill all the way through. We're going to grab our frame brackets at this point and the flange that has the oblong holes on top. We're going to take some more of that plastic strip and we're going to go right over the mounting holes and just kind of wrap it around to make sure it sticks. We're going to do that on both sides of the bracket. We'll do that for the other bracket as well. Now since we're on the driver's side we're going to grab the drivers bracket. It has a D on it. The passenger side will have a P. We're going to take our bracket, you want to make sure this tab towards the back with the single hole is on the back side of this hat channel here. We'll lift it up and you can see how those two holes are going to line up. Now in each one of the holes we're going to take one of our 5/8 bolts and a flat washer and go through our bracket and all the way through the frame.Where the bolts came through the frame we're going to take a conical tooth washer, you want to make sure the teeth are going to be facing towards the frame, slide it over the bolt, and then we're going to secure it with a hex nut. Now at this point we just want to get this kind of snug. We don't really want to tighten it down too much. We're going to do that for the other one as well. The other side bracket is going to go on the same way with the same combination of hardware. Now that both the brackets are in place you want to make sure that the pilot hole that we drilled is lined up with the bracket underneath. Once that is lined up, we're going to come back and we're going to enlarge all of our pilot holes to a 9/16 except the one that's closest to the cab in the center. We're going to leave that one alone for right now. For the center hole that is closest to the cab we're going to grab the drill bit that we used for our pilot hole and we're going to go through except this time the hole is going to be in to the hat channel. We want to drill all the way through it. Now that we have the hole going all the way through the hat channel we're going to come back with a 1-1/8 hole saw and we're going to go through, but we're only going to be going through the bed of the truck. Now with the hole drilled through the bed we can clearly see the hole that's going through the hat channel. We're going to need to enlarge that to a 9/16 just like we did with all the other holes. Now everywhere we drilled we're going to come back with some clear spray paint because it's never a good idea to leave exposed metal on your truck. Now we're going to take the spacer, we're going to put it inside the hole we drilled, so it's going through the hat channel and that the holes line up. You want to make sure you have that plastic covering on the side that's going to be facing towards the bed. On one of our thicker spacer blocks, we're going to put it over the hole that's towards the tailgate. We'll take another one and we're going to place that right over the hole that we drilled with our spacer inside the hat channel. We can take our rail and we're going to line it up with the holes. You may have to move the blocks a little bit to get everything to line up. Make sure all the other holes line up, and then we can start putting in our hardware. The hole in the center towards the cab, we're going to take our long carriage bolts. It's going to go through the rail and go all through that spacer and through the hat channel until it engages that square. The hole towards the tailgate we're going to take another carriage bolt, but it's going to be one of the shorter ones in our kit. It may help if you kind of lift up on the rail. That way we can everything to line up where it needs to be and get that bolt to pass through. Now the bolts towards the cab on the end we're going to be using a hex bolt with a lock washer attached to it. Again, we're going to pass it all the way down through the rail and through the bed. Then finally for the last hole we're going to take another one of our smaller carriage bolts, line it up, and make sure it goes all the way through engaging that square. For both the center bolts we're going to take one of our thinner spacer blocks, and again making sure you have that plastic coating on there facing towards the bed, slide that over the bolt. Take a conical tooth washer, and then secure it down with a hex nut.Now for the bolt that's coming through the bracket towards the tailgate you'll notice that there's going to be a small gap right here. We're going to want to take two of the U shaped spacer blocks. The top one you want to make sure has that isolator strip on it because it's going to be touching the bed. We're going to place those above the bracket so that it's going to be going around the bolt. Push those in place so that it has something to support it whenever we fully attach it. Then we'll take a conical tooth washer making sure the teeth are facing up towards the bracket and we'll secure it with a 1/2 inch hex nut. The other side is going to secure the same way using the same hardware. Now for the bolt that passes through the hat channel you're going to want to grab an extra set of hands so they can be in the bed. Take one of the thicker spacer blocks and make sure it has that plastic isolator on there. Then we're going to grab a handle nut. The easiest way I've found is if we actually take our handle nut and kind of get it close to lined up with our spacer block. We're going to feed it into the hat channel until we can get it lined up with the bolt and lift up. Then have our assistant in the bed turn the nut so we can get it started. Once we have it started and we start tightening it up it will trap that handle nut against the hat channel so we can just focus on tightening the bolt in the bed.To get the proper spacing for our forward rail, or the rail that's going to be closes to the cab, we went ahead and put out assembled fifth wheel in place. We're going to use that as a template to put our other rail down. We'll get it close, and then we'll lift up on the leg and slide everything in place. Now once the legs are in all the rails, you want to make sure that it's a snug fit so you're going to push that forward rail towards the back one. Then we'll double check our measurements to make sure it's square in the truck bed.Now we're going to do the same thing we did with our rear rail. We're going to take a small bit and we're going to drill the two outer holes on both sides, and then one closest to the cab in the center. With the pilot holes drilled out we're going to go ahead and lift the fifth wheel up so we can slide the rail out of the way. Then we're going to enlarge all of them to that 9/16. Just like the other rail we're going to take one of our thick spacer blocks with the plastic coating on it and place it right over that center hole. Then we can reinstall the rail. We'll just get it somewhat close, lift up on our fifth wheel, and slide everything in place. Double check that everything is lined up. You can see that our spacer block moved so we're going to have to push that back to where it's underneath our rail here.Once we have everything lined up, we'll take one of our carriage bolts. We're going to pass it through the rail, through that spacer block, and then down to the bottom of the truck. It may take a little bit of wiggling everything around to get everything to line up. Then we're going to repeat that. We're also going to use the carriage bolts but with no spacer around the edge in the other four locations. When we're securing everything on the bottom we're going to be using the same combination of hardware that we did for the other rails. In the center we're going to use that large spacer block, conical tooth washer, and nut. Then for the plates on the side you want to come from the inside of the frame and put those two U shaped spacers underneath. Then again attach it with a conical tooth washer and a hex nut. We'll repeat that for all the remaining locations. With everything in place we can go ahead and tighten down our hardware. For the 1/2 inch hardware we're going to be using a 3/4 inch socket. To tighten up our frame bolts I'm going to use a 15/16 socket and hold the nut on the inside of the frame with a 15/16 wrench. Now I'm going to come back with a torque wrench and I'm going to torque all my hardware down. However, when we do we want to make sure we torque down the bolts that are attaching the rails to the brackets and then go back and torque the brackets to the frame. That will finish up your look at a Reese Quick Install Custom Installation Kit with Base Rails for fifth wheel trailer hitches, part number RP50074-58 on our 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty.

Excellent parts and easy to install, had no problem at all mounting everything to my F-250 8' bed.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Very happy how soon the product I ordered was at my door step. 3 days after I ordered it. Put the base to my 5th wheel on my 2017 250 diesel sd took me around 5 hrs, would have been faster with 2 people. The base fit my husky 16k prefect when I done torquing all the bolts. Going to use this hitch to pull my 29.5 Durango EZ 1500.

by:
2017 Ford Edge

Very easy to install. Measure twice, drill once. I used every piece of galvanic corrosion tape to protect the aluminum bed in the kit, probably could have used a little more. Even though I painted the edge of the holes after drilling, maybe some sort of insulator could be used there also.

The kit arrived within a few days-very happy about that. very easy to install. the directions were clear and pictures good. I went to the trouble of using a sharpie to mark the part numbers on everything before I started just to keep to all straight.

I would note that on the 2017 F350 diesel the only problem bolt was on the driver side inline with the DEF tank. long skinny arms with flexible wrist is ideal (not what I have). I would also suggest taping the shims onto the outboard frame brackets to save yourself some frustrations. otherwise they are difficult to get and keep in place, especially on the driver side.

the two nuts that go inside the frame tube come on/with a nice handle although a bit light on the wield. here again save yourself and tape the shims on before you try to insert two things into that hole, align and fasten the bolt-by yourself. I used an extension with wobble head and socket to turn the bolt while holding the nut "assembly" in place.

I did remove the rear wheels and fender well liner-a must.

Lastly, great customer service on the phone. Pleasant and patient answering questions.

Great rail kit. Fairly simple install. The instructions are easy to follow. I did not have to remove spare or rear wheels to install. Only had to have helper for the two bolts in the third row. Hint, tape the u spacers to the long handle nut that goes inside the bed cross member. I did install rails in my previous truck (seventeen years ago) so I kind of knew what to expect. Frame brackets are a lot better now.

working as expected. should last my lifetime

The product has served we well. We have travelled 14 states and about 15,000 miles pulling out fifth wheel rv with this rail system and no failures. I would say the kit is idiot proof but I was proven wrong. I had to pay a mobile mechanic to install it since I was so busy getting a house ready to sell and he did a few things wrong. He used the wrong bolts in the wrong holes and overtightened and probably didn't use all the spacers correctly since he bent the ribs in the bed of my brand new truck. There wasn't much I could do about it after it was done. It was very hard to find someone willing to even do the install. After all of that, it has still performed flawlessly.

by:

Took a little time to receive this, due to supplier or just the new model of the truck. ( it did take a couple of months for the bed-bolt socket to become available before I could get the bed liner). Could not find a video for this product installed but the instructions were great and the install went smooth. I did remove the spare and rear wheels. No problems with wires or hoses and the only nut that was close to being hard to get to was driver side front and it was not bad. This was my first install of this type product and my hitch fits better than my previous truck that I had paid to install. Hooked up to my 30' camper, took for a test drive and I'm back in the camping business. Other than the wait, I can't imagine a better deal.

The hitch install kit is a good product. It took about six hours to install because my installer had never put this kit on the new Ford with the aluminum box before and he wanted it to be right. There was some issues with the fit on the frame. Little things like welds not ground down and getting it to fit tight to the frame of the truck. He was able to fix all of the issues with out any problems. Just a little longer installation time is needed to insure a proper fit than we expected. Overall, a good product. I would buy this hitch installation kit again, and I do recommend it.

by:

Process of installation was not complicated, you will need a second hand on the two bolt rails in the channel. Directions were good and the installation video helped out a great deal.

Reese 5th wheel hitch kit was heavy duty and assembled very well. Good company follow up and a good product for the money.

Would give this item 5 stars except the spacer blocks are extremely difficult to use in certain spots. If the brackets had a way to hold the block it would make the installation much easier and besides the spacer blocks it is easy to install and works great.

Excellent customer service! Fast delivery. This was my 2nd time shopping for 5th wheel hitch and rails. Extremely happy with your products and service. Highly recommend

One rail has bow in it to where I have to use a jack to reinstall 5 th wheel, had it checked by dealer and was told holes where off where it comes through the bed

by:

The information I received when I called was excellent. I placed the order and two days later the hitch was on my door step. All of the boxes were in good shape and everything appears to be complete. I will install the hitch this weekend and see how we make out. so far so good. Thank you for the great service.

I have installed a rail system in the past, but was surprised by this one. It's plug and play with pre drilled holes that match your vehicle for less drilling. High quality steel with all the accessories needed to complete the installation.

Super Pleased with etrailer's products AND personal service from their highly knowledgable staff! I went to a local hitch installation dealer where they attempted to find Item #RP50074-58 ( 5th wheel RAIL KIT for my new '19 F-250 SuperDuty). The installer tried numerous warehouses and distributors across the U.S. but no one had this part! He suggested that I do some further research via the internet on finding this part and wished me good luck IF I did. I began my search with no luck; the reasons being given me were due to the pandemic, few,( if any) people were working and even FEWER warehouses were stocking items! Just when I thought I had exhausted all search possibilities; I reached John H. at etrailer. He was extremely professional, knowledgable and helpful in assuring me that they did, IN FACT, have my part # IN STOCK AND could ship it IMMEDIATELY! Ordered it on the spot (Friday) and it arrived before noon on Monday! I'm EXTREMELY pleased w/ etrailer's quality products; their availability and the friendly service of their staff. John H. went above and beyond in making my purchase easy assuring me that my item would arrive as promised, complete w/ tracking info and a phone # w/ personal ext. if I had any further questions regarding my order. NOW.... how can ya beat THAT? ....YA CAN'T! Have done business w/ etrailer in the past and will definately continue to do so in the future.

Great product! The custom Reese Quick-Install Rails and Installation Kit was as easy as advertised. Only drilling required was through the bed to install the rails. Two people would help the install for the driver side front bolt.

Needed it quickly and ended up using the 2-day shipping option. Pieces came on time.

Directions to install were easy to follow and fit as advertised. Only special tool needed was a torque wrench. Very happy with the product.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch For A 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty
You can only have one pivoting point between the trailer and tow vehicle so that means you'll have to decide between a slider hitch and locking out the Turning Point or getting a fixed hitch and using the Turning Point as a rotating pin box. The Turning point pin box is going to offer you almost twice as much turning clearance without you having to get out of the truck and place the hitch into the maneuvering position each time. Since you already have the Turning Point on your trailer you'd...

Congrats on the new truck! I do not recommend an under bed mounting system over above bed rails. After market under bed systems have limitations on what type of hitches and pin boxes you can use and sometimes expensive adapters are required. There is nothing comparable to the Ford OEM puck system available for your 2022 Ford F-250 either. To add a custom fit set of above bed rails to your 2022 F-250, I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails item # RP50074-58....

We always recommend sticking with what the manufacturer of the hitch/rail kits states as they are the authority on the the weight ratings of their products. We actually don't have a Husky rail kit that was confirmed as a fit for your truck though so it sounds like someone installed a set of universal rails. The best option we have is a custom fit fifth wheel rail kit like the Reese part RP50074-58 which is going to easily have the capacity you need. For a hitch the Reese # RP300928 has...

For a 2019 Ford F-350 I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50074-58 or just the bracket kit # RP50074. The custom brackets will allow you to mount the 5th wheel rails easily and these rails will accommodate the 5th wheel hitches and the gooseneck adapter you have pictured. The rails are industry standard so you will have no issues with compatibility of your Curt gooseneck adapter # 16055or 5th wheel hitch between...

  • Fifth Wheel Rail Kit for 2020 Ford F-250 Short Bed for Reese Hitch
For your 2020 Ford F-250 short bed we have the Reese custom install fifth wheel rail kit part # RP50074-58 as a fit which will work great with your current Reese hitch and gooseneck plate. The fifth wheel rails aren't independently weight rated but what our manufacturers have told us is that they have basically the same weight capacity as the hitch that's installed in them. So what that means for you is that you wouldn't have to worry about the capacity of the rails. The # RP50074-58...

  • Comparing the Reese Sidewinder and MORryde Rotating Pin Boxes
If you do not want to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch then your only option is a fixed 5th wheel hitch with a rotating pin box. I personally prefer the Reese Sidewinder Rotating Pin Box over the MORryde Rotating Pin Box because there are custom wedges available for this pin box whereas MORryde only offers a universal wedge. The wedge will be required to prevent the pivot point for occuring inside the jaws of the 5th wheel hitch. The universal wedges can cause excessive chucking issues as...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Rail Brackets for 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty
The 5th wheel brackets I recommend for your 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty are the Reese Quick-Install Custom Brackets # RP50074 that also are available in the full kit # RP50074-58. These will not require extra drilling into your frame for installation. If you want the universal fit brackets you can use the Universal kit # RP30035 or just brackets # RP30439. If you use the brackets only with either kit, you will still want to use new hardware for the rails # RP58430.

  • Will B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Fit Reese Rails for a 2017 Ford F-250
Yes, your B&W Patriot 5th wheel trailer hitch will fit installation kit # RP50074-58 for your 2017 Ford F-250. The hitch fits industry standard above the bed rails and that is what is included in the Reese installation kit so you will be good to go!

  • Comparing Patriot Slider and Companion Slider Fifth Wheel Hitch for 2017 Ford F-350
The Patriot Slider part # BWRVK3270 might be a bit more noisy than the Companion slider part # BWRVK3400 due to the increased number of mounting points, 4 at the corners vs. 1 in the center. Probably not that noticeable and certainly not something that's been reported. The Companion requires a turnoverball hitch part # BWGNRK1116 for your truck which wouldn't really be much more difficult than installing a custom above bed rail kit like the Reese # RP50074-58. It's basically a very similar...

  • Comparison of B&W and Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Install Bracket Kits for a 2017 Ford F-350
Essentially the install brackets kits that fit your 2017 Ford F-350 accomplish the same thing. And when you compare the Reese # RP50074-58 and the B&W # BWRVK2402 they even install in the same location. They're custom kits so they use existing holes in your truck's frame. So you don't have to drill into the frame. With that being said, there is a second Reese kit, part # RP56017-53. This kit is an outboard install which means the brackets install on the outside of the frame rails....

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for Towing a 10,500 lb GVWR Trailer with a 2017 Ford F-250
Since you have a short bed on your 2017 Ford F-250 it is best to go with a sliding 5th wheel hitch. The sliding feature will help to keep your trailer from contacting the cab on your truck in tight turning situations. The best option that we have to offer is the Demco Hijacker Autosliding 5th wheel hitch. The autosliding feature on this 5th wheel hitch makes tight turns much easier because you don't have to get in and out of your truck to lock and unlock the sliding feature like what you...

  • 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Installation Kit for a 2017 Ford F-250 Long Bed
For your new 2017 Ford F-250 you have some options for 5th wheel hitches and installation kits. For an install kit I recommend going with a custom kit, # RP50074-58. With a custom kit there is less drilling required and it takes less time to install compared to universal kits. And for a hitch I recommend the Curt A20 # C16140. This hitch is rated for 20,000 pounds and features a cushioned head for improved ride quality. I have linked a video review of this hitch for you. I also recommend...

  • B&W 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Installation Kit for a 2017 Ford F-250, 6-3/4 Foot Bed, 4x4
As far as a regular above the bed rail fit for a 5th wheel hitch there is nothing yet for the 2017 Ford F-250. But there is a B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitch available for the 4x4 short bed models without the factory rail kit. It is # BWGNRK1116. You could then use the Companion hitch # BWRVK3400-5W. Another option if you want to use the Patriot Slider # BWRVK3270 is to use a different brand 5th wheel installation kit. This hitch will fit in industry-standard, above-bed rails - B&W,...

  • Distance of Fifth Wheel Install Location on a 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty
The Reese Quick Install Bracket, part # RP56017-53 installs its rear bar at 29-1/8 inches away from the rear of the bed, compared to the rear bar being installed at 29-1/2 inches for part # RP50074-58. You likely won't have much difference in the hitch position between these two kits. Keep in mind that this distance is measured from the rear of the truck bed. I've included and labeled images from their instruction manuals so you can get an idea of how the rest of the system installs.

  • Custom Fit Fifth Wheel Rail Kit Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-250
For your 2017 Ford F-250 the Husky rail bracket kit you have is not the correct kit. That is why you aren't able to install it. For a custom install bracket kit with rails that is a confirmed fit you'd want the part # RP50074-58 which will bolt right up and minimize drilling. If you have Husky rails already you would not be able to reuse them with a Reese bracket kit so you'd have to start over with new rails like what this kit offers.

  • Can Husky/Valley 7054 5th Wheel Hitch be Installed on a 2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty
From what I was able to find it looks like your Husky/Valley 7054 sliding 5th wheel hitch installs on industry standard rails which means you can use the adapter # RP30156 if your 2019 Ford F-350 will have the OEM puck system, or you can use the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails # RP50074-58 if your F-350 won't have the OEM puck system. Attached is a photo of the dimensions used for industry standard rails. If you have something different please let me know.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch and Installation Kit for 2019 Ford F-250 Super Duty 2WD
The best sliding 5th wheel hitch for your 2019 Ford F-250 2WD is the Demco Hijacker Autoslide # DM8550035 because it will automatically slide to give you turning clearance required so you don't need to get in and out of your truck to adjust between two locked positions to maneuver around gas pumps and make tighter turns at your campsite. This is especially nice on those rainy days to keep from jumping in and out of your cab a few times to make the adjustments. If you prefer a manual...
