Question:

Naked roof. What would be the best/safest solution to carry two kayaks? They will be on top of the CRV which will be towed behind a motorhome.

First, double-check your CR-V owner's manual to make sure your two kayaks' combined weight does not exceed the vehicle's roof weight-bearing capacity. Once you know it can handle the weight of your two 10-foot kayaks you have several options for carriers.

By far the most economical option is to use foam block type kayak carriers, such as those shown on the link at right. These do not require a roof rack (but are still compatible with some) and they offer a great combination of low cost and low weight. A lightweight carrier means that more of the vehicle roof capacity remains available for your two kayaks.

For example, the Malone Deluxe Carrier # MPG152 includes 2 straps to secure the foam and bars to your vehicle and bow and stern tie downs. You can compare these various carriers to your particular kayaks to determine the best fit.

Your other option to allow use of different style carriers, such as the popular J-style, is to install a roof rack on the CR-V. The other link at right will show you all roof rack options for your CR-V.

With a rack in place you could use one of the compatible kayaks carriers shown on the other link, for example the SportRack # SR5511. The linked article will help you consider your best option for your particular kayaks.
