The 2009 Avalanche does not require a plug to install a brake controller. GM eliminated the port under the dash with the 2007 New Body Style trucks. The tow package wiring is located under the dash, above where your left leg would be as you are sitting behind the wheel. The tow package harness is 4 or 5 wires that are taped to a larger wiring harness. This harness will have a white tag attached to it, which makes it easier to locate.
Your controller would wire directly into this wiring harness, although it will NOT wire up color for color. The red and black striped tow package wire attaches to the black wire on the controller, the light blue and white striped tow package wire connects to the red wire on the controller, the dark blue tow package wire connects to the blue wire on the controller, and the white tow package wire attaches to the white wire on the controller. If your tow package wiring harness has an orange wire, cover the end of it with electrical tape and bundle it up out of the way.
We have an online install video, as well and an install guide that you might find helpful. I will include links to these below. The video shows the install on a Silverado, but the install would be identical on your Avalanche.
