Selecting a Powered Trailer Winch for 3500-lb 21-Ft Boat

Updated 07/03/2014 | Published 07/02/2014

Question:

I have a 3500 lb 21 foot boat to pull onto a boat trailer. The angle is not severe and I literally will load it only one time per year. At my age, with this heavy a boat it has become difficult to hand winch onto the trailer. I was looking at a Power winch 4000 but Im not sure if the capacity is adequate. I also have considered a Master 5,000 lb winch. Thank you for your recommendation.

You can use the linked article to help you determine the appropriate capacity winch for use with your 3500-lb boat. The winch capacity required for your 3500-lb will depend on the degree of slope. A winch rated for 2000-lbs working on a 20-percent slope can handle a load of just over 6,800-lbs. Also, if your trailer has roller bunks versus carpeted bunks the reduced rolling friction will mean a lighter-duty winch, like # 2953AT from Master Lock can do the job.

I have linked you to a second article concerning electric winch installation.

Generally we suggest selecting a winch with plenty of excess capacity. This will mean it will operate well within its safety margin. The additional cost of a higher-rated winch is usually quite modest.
