SCC Cables or Konig Tire Chains for 2009 Honda Fit Sport 185/55R16 Tires

Question:

Hello, I have a question about the size of snow chains. I want to replace my cheap ladder cables with something better, probably the Konig CG-9, but my cars owners manual recommends a specific set of cables that does -not- match the size recommended by the chain manufacturer based on the tire size. I have a 2009 Honda Fit Sport with 185/55-R16 tires. According to Security Chain Company, their chains for that tire are model SC1026 but my owners manual says to use model SC1030. I have a set of SC1030 those do fit my tires, so the discrepancy makes me question whether I can trust the tire size to choose chains for my car. And naturally no manufacturer provides physical measurements, nor do different models of chains fit the same set of tire sizes, to compare. And just because my situation wasnt already complicated, Konig recommends two different chain sizes for 185/55R16 depending whether or not I have Pirelli Winter 190 tires. I dont, but without knowing what makes those tires different this makes me further question which size will fit. Based on all of that, should I buy the size of snow chains recommended by Konig one of them, is there a specific size that you can recommend for my car, or should I try to find a store where I can test fit chains before buying them? Thank you!

I completely understand where you're coming from. Choosing tire chains can be overwhelming and confusing at times but you've come to the right place for an answer!

The tire chains I recommend for the 185/55R16 tires on your 2009 Honda Fit Sport are the Konig Self-Tensioning CG9 - Size 065 # TH00023065. These are Class S rated which means they are built for tires with low clearances so there is less of a chance that anything is damaged on your vehicle.

The reason Honda recommends the Security Chain Company model SC1030 is because these are built for low clearance situations like what I mentioned above. When we're talking about low clearances we are actually talking about the back sidewall of the tire - the part of the tire closest to your vehicle. At this side of your tire is where you find parts like brakes lines and wiring so if you have standard chains they can damage these parts and cause major issues.

While the SC1030 will work for your low clearance situation, it's also a tire cable as opposed to a chain. Cables are good for abiding by the law where chains are needed and you don't want to spend much money, but if you want chains that are actually going to do anything for traction then you'll need to avoid cables which is why I recommended the CG9 above.

Hopefully this helped clear up some of that confusion you're having and puts your mind at ease about the CG9 chains. If you have any other questions please let me know! I've added a review video of the CG9 chains for you to check out.
