How to Reset the Brake on a Fulton Brake Winch # FK15500301

Updated 05/13/2013 | Published 05/07/2013

Question:

My winch FK15500301 is used for raising and lowering my sailboat keel. The winch was over cranked and now will not secure under a load. It will lift the keel but not lock. Which repair kit would most likely work for me and do I need any special tools to make these repairs?

After speaking with my contact at Fulton, I have found the problem with your Fulton Brake Winch FK15500301 is most likely the brake being locked in the open position.

To ensure this is the issue, raise a load with the winch. If you hear the ratchet pawl clicking, the brake is operational. If you do not hear the pawl, you will need to lower the load without letting go of the handbrake. The brake will then need to be reset.

To reset the brake, hold a flat-edge screwdriver between the drum gear and the top of the pinion gear and turn the handle slowly in a clockwise motion until the pinion gear rotates freely. I have included a graphic displaying how to do this.

You will not necessarily need to uninstall the winch to perform this function as it can be performed after the winch is installed on equipment. This is usually a one-time operation for problems like this.

I have provided a link to our FAQ page on resetting winch brakes as well as a link to our FAQ page on hand winches.
