Recommended Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2017 Chevy Cruze with Low Ground Clearance

Question:

I have a 2017 Cruze LT Hatchback. I am looking at this hitch for a cargo carrier when travel and a bike rack some weekends. The video of the install mentioned getting one with a raise or a raised adapter maybe for more rest ground clearance. What are your recommendations for a cargo carrier and/or raised adapter. Thank you.

Your 2017 Chevy Cruze LT Hatchback does have relatively low ground clearance so it's definitely a good idea to try and create some additional height when adding accessories like a cargo carrier or bike rack to the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch # C11458.

The only Class I rated cargo carrier we have available that features a rise in its shank is the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110. This carrier provides a 3-3/4" rise from the hitch attachment point along with a robust 300 pound weight capacity. I really do like this particular unit not only because of its mentioned rise but also because of its mesh floor that allows for various tie down points (and is easier to clean) and relatively light weight of just 30 pounds - giving you more capacity to use for your loaded cargo.

I don't recommend using a separate rise adapter, as it will reduce the tongue weight on the hitch by 50 percent (which would cut it down to 100 pounds on the above-mentioned Curt model). This doesn't give you much to work with when you subtract 30 pounds for the carrier itself.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this carrier below that you can check out. I have also included a link that will take you to our complete selection of Class I rated bike racks that you can look through. I think your best option with limited ground clearance is with a hanging-style carrier like the Swagman Titan # S63400, which features a raised shank and can handle two bikes that weigh up to 35 pounds each.
