How Much Weight Can I Tow and Carry In Cargo in My 2016 Honda CR-V

Question:
I am moving and want to know the total weight capacity my vehicle can handle safely. I have a large Thule cargo box to put luggage in on top, 2 adults, 2 dogs and a 5x8 U haul trailer for a queen sized mattress and box spring. Does the total 1500 towing weight include the the 850lb max load or is that in addition too?

Expert Reply:
The 850 lb maximum load includes the weight of all occupants, cargo, accessories (like the Thule Box) and the tongue weight of the U-haul trailer. First subtract the combined weight of the occupants (including the dogs) from 850 lbs and how much weight you have left over is the amount of weight you can carry in the box, cargo in the vehicle and the tongue weight of the trailer.
I have attached an article that helps you determine the tongue weight of the trailer. The 1500 weight is the amount of weight the CR-V can tow and usually 10% of the total weight is the tongue weight. For example: if your trailer does end up weighing the full 1500 lbs then your tongue weight should be 150 lbs. You want to just make sure you considering the tongue weight into the 850 lbs you can carry. I strongly suggest taking a look at the help article and determining the tongue weight of your trailer with a scale like part # e99044 before towing it.
