Saris Freedom EX 2 vs Thule Doubletrack Pro Comparison and Recommendation
Question:
I have bikes that have fenders and racks and so am currently looking at two racks - the Thule DoubleTrack Pro and the Saris Freedom EX 2. I would be using a 1.25inch Drawtite class 1 hitch on a 2012 Prius v. Both seem to get good reviews but the Saris seems to have more capabilities rated for heavier bikes, tilt down for rear access, longer bar available for 50inch wheelbase. That said, I might not need any or all of that and the Thule has other features more adaptable bike frame gripping?, possibly more effective locking, folds up closer to the vehicle?. I have been leaning toward the Thule but the Saris deserves consideration. Do you have a recommendation, based on overall quality, utility and ease and safety of loading and carrying bikes? I carry heavier, touring-oriented, bikes at times but not over 35 lbs. each. I also carry a mixte at times. The quality, reliability and safe carrying would be my top concerns. Overall weight would also be in there as the Prius v is not rated to carry heavy, hitch based weight. Any other recommendations would be welcome. Thanks,

For ease of use the Saris Freedom EX2 part # SA4412F and the Thule DoubleTrack Pro XT part # TH92BJ have a trade off. The Saris is 10 lbs lighter which means it will be easier to install and remove, but I prefer the way the Thule grabs the bike frame much more than the Saris. If you have no problem with the rack weighing 35 lbs the Thule wins that category. Also many of our customers prefer the Thule and haven't exactly reviewed the Saris as well either in terms of using it.
Quality wise you can't really beat Thule so I'd give the edge there too. Also if you check out the test course video attached you'll see that the Saris is very stable in the hitch on the road too.
