I know the vin number but how do I find the tow capacity

The weight capacity of your trailer should be listed on a sticker or tag somewhere along the frame. This is typically found towards the tongue but if you can't find it there you will need to do some searching or contact the manufacturer with your VIN. Although VINs can help us determine a lot about the trailer, one thing it doesn't show is weight capacity as you can see from the attached photo.
If you are talking about the towing weight capacity of your vehicle this can be found in your owner's manual or by contacting your local dealership (related to your vehicle of course) and asking what the towing weight rating is using the VIN.
On pickups you can sometimes find the towing weight capacity on a sticker placed on the door jamb of your driver's side door.
