How to Determine Towing Capacity of a 2003 GMC Envoy

Updated 07/04/2017 | Published 07/02/2017

Question:

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy SLE L6. I also have a Reese Weight Distribution system 49902 and dual sway bars pro series. I want to know what would the weight towing capacity of the envoy be with this system on. I know that the hitch on the envoy can handle 7600lbs of towing weight with a distribution system but I want to know of the truck can pull that weight since the sticker says that the vehicle towing capacity may be different than what the hitch holds. I am trying to see if I can tow a 2017 Jayco Jayflight 26bh fiberglass travel trailer. The Envoy has Monroe Load Adjustment rear shocks and a BandM Transmission SuperCooler. The Travel Trailer empty weight is 5196lbs. With full propane tanks.

From my research an appropriately equipped 2003 GMC Envoy with the L6 engine can tow up to 6,300 pounds. To determine if your Envoy is equipped as such you can contact GM and provide them with your VIN and they can tell you exactly what your Envoy capacities are with it's original options. The additional aftermarket parts you've added will not increase its towing capacity but will make it perform better when towing.

The best way to determine if your Envoy can tow a particular trailer (This is the best way but not necessarily the easiest) is to load the vehicle just as it will be loaded when taking it on a trip with the trailer and weigh it on a commercial scale.

Once you have its loaded weight find the Envoy's gross combined weight rating (GCWR) on its spec sheet inside the driver's side door. Subtract the weight of the loaded vehicle from the GCWR. What you are left with is the maximum amount of weight you can safely tow with the vehicle loaded.
