Recommended Torque Specification for Curt 2-5/16-Inch Hitch Ball # C40030
Question:
I just received one of you Curt 40030 trailer ball. How does one torque the nut to 450 ft lbs. The torque wrench I have only goes to 150 ft lbs. Neither you or harbor freight, home depot or lowes sells a torque wrench to tighten a bolt/nut to 450 ft lbs. Do I have to go out and buy a compressor and impact wrench to install this and the bolts on my pro series sway hitch?? HELP.

Thank you for your purchases from etrailer. I do not see a Curt hitch ball among them but just the same I checked with my technical contact at Curt Manufacturing to confirm the correct torque spec for their 2-5/16-Inch Hitch Ball # C40030. It is indeed 450-ft-lbs which is definitely on the higher side. Our installers here do not have torque wrenches rated up to that spec; typically up to 250-ft-lbs. My contact at Curt said you'd find them only at a specialty tool shop.
But you are correct that an impact wrench is the preferred installation method and your local auto repair shop may be your best bet for avoiding the need to purchase one.
