Chevrolet Impala Trailer Hitch

Installation of a Trailer Hitch on a 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Today we are going to install part number 36407 from Draw-Tite, and we are going to install this Class II trailer hitch receiver on a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. First we will show you where the hitch mounts up to the frame of the vehicle. The hitch is going to mount up to the bottom frame of the vehicle here and here. And then also it is going to mount to the outside hole here from a crossmember, one on both sides. And on the passengers side frame, it is going to be the same existing holes, but right now they are covered up by the exhaust. So that means that the next step is going to be to lower the exhaust. And that gives us a little more working room to install our hardware.

We will go ahead and start installing the hardware into our frame. What is going to happen is that this block will go on the inside along with this bolt. And also, there are two different bolt sizes in this kit. There is a short one here there are four of those. And we are going to use these two things along the passengers side. The long bolts will go onto the crossmember toward the rear of the vehicle. We will put our wire pull into the hole that we want to put the hardware into, out the access hole, and then just push the block onto the wire in the inside of the frame. And then one of our short bolts push the assembly inside and pull it back out. And then do the rest of the holes identically, the same way. All the blocks are going to be the same.

At this point, we can go ahead and start installing the hitch on the vehicle. We will put the passengers side bracket over the exhaust and let the exhaust hold it up for a bit while we get the drivers side bolt holes lined up. Now that we have got all the hardware started, we can go ahead and snug them down. With the bolts snugged down, now we can give them their final torque, as specified in the instructions. All that remains now is to go ahead and reinstall the rubber hanger onto our exhaust. And that finishes our install of install part number 36407 from Draw-Tite.
