Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen Trailer Hitch Questions and Answers

  • Trailer Hitch Ground Clearance On 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagwen
  • The hitches that we carry for your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, have very similar clearance distances. I have attached a photo of a hitch and the clearance distance marked. The 10-1/2 inches is from the top of the receiver opening, so the bottom of the receiver will be approximately 8-1/2 inches from the ground. I am not aware of any hitches with a different design that have more ground clearance.

  • 1-1/4 Inch to 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Adapter to Carry a 2 Inch Bike Rack with a 2014 Jetta Sportwagen
  • One of our most popular 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch trailer hitch adapters is the Brophy Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter, # HT5R. This adapter provides a 5 inch rise for improved ground clearance. Keep in mind, using a trailer hitch adapter or extender will decrease the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50 percent. All of the trailer hitches we offer for your 2014 Jetta Sportwagen are Class I trailer hitches with a maximum tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs. Using an adapter will...

  • How to Carry Three Bikes in Class I Hitch on 2014 VW Jetta SportWagen
  • The # C11474 Curt Hitch on your SportWagen is a Class I hitch. The bike rack and hitch manufacturers all agree that no more than two bikes should ever be carried on a Class I hitch. Adding a third bike would move the weight too far away from the hitch, which would apply leverage to the hitch that is wasn't designed to withstand. This leverage can bend the hitch or cause its attachment points to the vehicle to fail. Which would be bad. This leaves you with a few different alternatives....

  • Trailer Hitch Fit and Towing Capacity for a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • From the research I did it looks like your 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen has a towing capacity of 2,000 lbs. You would need to consult the owners manual of your vehicle to verify this as well. For a hitch you would then want the Draw Tite part # 24866 which is a confirmed fit. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 119179KIT. For a ball mount part # 3593, for a 2 inch hitch ball part # 19258 or for a 1-7/8 inch ball...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • On all of the available trailer hitches for the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, the receiver and cross tubing will be fairly low. This is because of the attachment point placement on the VW frame. By design, the hitches have to be that low. On all the models, the top of the receiver tube will be just below the rear fascia. So the Curt Hitch part # C11474 that you referenced sits about as high as any hitch could. For a ball mount you will want the part # C45520, pin and clip part #...

  • Troubleshooting Curt Hitch Install on a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta Where Bolt Holes Wont Line Up
  • Sometimes hitches can get slightly bent during shipping and this can be fixed by bending the hitch back into place as long as the hitch only has a slight bend to it. If yours isn't lining up I can almost guarantee that is what happened. Some people will use open steps for leverage, vices and even car jacks to apply controlled force to bend the hitch back. You will want to look for flaking paint and physical stress marks on the hitch before and after you attempt to bend the hitch back....

  • Actually the Draw-Tite part # 24866 that you referenced can be used for either purpose. It can carry bike racks or cargo carriers, or tow a small trailer that weighs up to 2,000 lbs. Check out the install video I attached for more information. You should note that just because this hitch is rated that doesn't mean your vehicle is capable of that. If the owners manual of your vehicle states a lower capacity then you would need to use that as the overall capacity. Since it is a Class I...

  • Actually Draw-Tite states in the installation instructions for the Draw-Tite # 24866 that the recommended ball mount should only be used in the rise position. So you are totally fine to do so. The recommended ball mount is Sportframe Drawbar # 3593 that has a 2-1/8 inch rise or a 2-3/4 inch drop. Its important that you only use this ball mount in the rise position otherwise you will void the warranty.

This will fit your hitch without an adapter. For your 2015 VW TDI Golf Sportwagen, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24949. • How to Carry 4 Bikes on a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen
  • No, on a Class I trailer hitch like # 24866, you are limited to carrying 2 bikes on a rack that is designed to fit in a Class I trailer hitch. The reason you are limited to just 2 bikes is because the hitch cannot handle the torque associated with carrying more than 2 bikes. Having a third and fourth bike on a rack would be too much weight too far away from the receiver. This weight provides a lot of stress on the receiver and is even greater when you are traveling and there is movement...

When we installed the # 24866 hitch on a 2011 Jetta SportWagen, we found that the hitch pin hole to furthest rearward point of rear bumper measured 4 inches. I know this is a wide range but because every vehicle is slightly different and the tongue weight of every trailer is different this is the best guesstimate I can come up with. To transport 4 bikes on your vehicle you will have to put one or two on roof-rack-mount bike racks and put the other two or three on a 2- or 3-bike trunk-mount rack.
