Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your Toyota Tacoma when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your Toyota Tacoma level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your Toyota Tacoma sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your Toyota Tacoma and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your Toyota Tacoma by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your Toyota Tacoma's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your Toyota Tacoma. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

I mounted the Firestone airbag system on my 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup. It was not as easy as the video makes it look (especially on the drivers side) but, it it turned out great. I mounted the compressor in the compartment behind the passenger seat behind the driver (see pic). I mounted the gauge and switch in the compartment between the driver and passenger (see pic). The airbag pictures are when they were holding 70 lbs pressure checking for air leaks. The first picture of the pickup is with 5 lbs air pressure in the bags and the second is with 50 lbs air pressure in the bags. When driving with 5 lbs in the bags it has the normal smooth ride and does a good job at 30 lbs of keeping the back end from sagging when I pull my boat.

Comments
Everything is still working great without any leaks. I would highly recommend them for any Tacoma owners.

Unfortunately my Firestone airbags arrived with the wrong fittings for the airline to airbag connection. I needed to have them installed asap for a road trip the next day. Lots of running around town to find the right parts was what it took to get me on the road the next day. Giving it 3 stars because once set up they do work good

by:

The product is great but who ever is in charge of making sure all the small parts are in the bag dropped the ball on this one I didn't have the 90° air fittings for the top of the bag had to make an extra trip to pick some up not a huge deal still got everything hooked up an they are great improvement thanks for the ease of fitting this together

Good kit quality parts, the only problem I have is one of the inflation valves keeps leaking at the hose conection no matter what I do to fix the problem.

Comments
Hmm, sounds like you may have a warranty issue on your hands. I went ahead emailed you that information.

The directions to were easy to follow and all of the parts were there. The hardest part of the install was removing the bump stops. They added a lot of stability to my Toyota Tacoma and made towing my 3300 lb RV alot less nerve wracking. The only downfall is one of my 1/4 quick connect fittings leaks. I need to order a new one, it's the one that goes on top of the airbag.

Comments
Bartholomew, check the air hose end that goes into the leaking fitting. We run into this once in a while where a short section of the hose has a scratch from routhing the line and that causes a leak. Cut the line back a bit where the out side of it is not scratched and the leak is usually fixed. Also being sure to make cut square to the line and making the bend in the line near the fitting as relaxed as possible helps.

Shipping was crazy fast ! Install was pretty straight forward, but as a shade tree mechanic without a lift it did take me a little longer than the you tube video stated. I will be using this kit to haul my UTV as it previously would make my Toyota Tacoma sag in the back.

by:

1 star, rather O star if possible. Faulty design of the hose fittings. Constantly leak no matter how straight you cut the hose. I had to put Locktite thread sealant around the fitting hoping it'll keep it from leaking. Would not recommend this to anyone unless they come up with a better fitting to fix the leak issues.

by:

Kit was shipped with incorrect air fittings which derailed the entire install. No excuse for something like that. Would like to tell you how they work but still waiting for replacement fittings

by:

They are not a cure-all; but do help when hauling heavy loads, or towing a travel trailer with my 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Pick-up.

Working fine after a year. Had a problem with leaks and pressure drop at first. Had to cut and re-install air lines and connectors at the airbag end, several times. But eventually got them to hold pressure. Now only slight air loss over several days.

They really helped to prevent sagging rear end, and minimize bucking when towing a small travel trailer with my Toyota Tacoma.

I still finally had to go with a load distribution hitch with anti-sway device to completely minimize sway while towing.

Installed on my 2011 Tacoma and wow what a difference hauling my can-am. You won’t regret this purchase. Highly recommend.

Everything was loose in the box. Missing washers and paint all scratched and dinged from shipping with no foam or packing in the box

This is the second time you have delivered my order. The first order was damaged and parts missing..took your team a week to get me a return label and I called every day..the second delivery was the wrong airbags. Now have to send them back. Not a good experience with your company. Can't wait to see what the third delivery has in store..

by:

My second purchase of the Firestone system. Easy installation with helpful instructions.

Air Ride suspension is the best system for increasing the towing and load carrying capabilities of your vehicle, without the usual sacrifice of ride comfort in the vehicle. Great product!

Great product that’s keeps my Tacoma level no matter the load. Easy to install and doing a great job still. Good company to buy from.

2014 ToyotaTacoma

I bought the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags for my 2014 Toyota Tacoma SR5 because the rear end sagged way too much when hauling our four mountain bikes on my Thule platform rack. The installation was very straightforward and took roughly 4 hours. A year later, the airbags work awesome, and I wish I had know to add them when I first bought the truck five years ago!

by:

I installed the air bags and changed both shocks in less then 2 hours!! They went in perfect and the instructions were great. I do think the best part was the online video of the install!!
Thanks
Great product

Comments
Well its been -40C up here in Ontario and these air bags are holding up just great!! Ive loaded my truck with would and put the bags to 50psi and the truck was level and the ride was just like there was nothing in the box. Ive also been able to add electric brake and tow and large trailer with a small pickup on it!!! Great product!!

Definitely makes it possible for my Tacoma to pretend it’s a real truck ?? (i.e., sit level and control my ~5k lb travel trailer or haul a bed full of pea gravel). I did have a slow leak on one side at the valve, but recutting and reinserting the air line cured it (it now holds pressure indefinitely). My truck does have a small add-a-leaf kit out back (actually 3 thin leaves), so I had to buy some additional parts (and modify them a bit) to accommodate the thicker leaf packs. All in all, one of the best things I’ve done to my little truck in terms of utility.

by:

The only issue is on the Tacoma when not using the air bag i keep 6 psi in them and it is really not a comfortable ride it seems to bounce bad over low spots on the road and it must sit higher than the rubber axle bump pads cause it feels like it bottoms out hits hard then bounces up.

Comments
I called my contact at Firestone to see if we could help improve your ride quality when you arent towing. My contact said that since youre having such hard bottom outs, it sounds like the brackets may be closer to each other than what is standard. A quick measurement can check this. With no air in the air bags, on a flat, level surface, and nothing in the bed of the truck, measure the distance between the top and bottom bracket. For your F2407 air bag kit, the brackets should be 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches apart. If they are closer than 4-1/2 inches apart, please let me know and, if possible, send photos of your air bag installation.

Kit cam quickly and the instructions were clear enough if you are mechanically inclined. If your not then don't try this because you need to have a good safe way to raise you vehicle pull the wheels off the back and work under for a couple hours. That being said once installed on my 2016 Tacoma the performance was excellent. I am currently running about 12 psi. And the hitch is about 1 1/2" higher with no load. Hooked onto my mower trailer with mower and it handled it as easily as my 2500HD. Mower is a JD 27hp 60" zero turn commercial. Haven't hooked the camper up to it but this definitely made the towing on my Taco much better. Great addition to any smaller or 1/2 ton truck that needs some beef in the back. Truck will be safer to handle loads if you do your air to match the load. I just use a bicycle pump to adjust. Easy to be accurate with each side.

by:

We installed this package on a 2016 Toyota Tacoma. The trailers are well within the towing capabilities of the truck, but the rear suspension would sag drastically. This system has been on the truck for a year with no issues, no leaking down. We keep about 10 psi in the bags at all times to stop unwanted compression and wear on them. IF your intent is to use them more frequently, go with the onboard compressor and wireless remote. I have that system on two F250's and it works flawlessly. Highly recommend.

by:

Straightforward install, works as advertised, helped with load/ride.

by:

Very easy to install, the videos made it even easier.
So far they work great. 200 gal. water tank only took 30 lb. of air to make the truck sit and handle like nothing on it.
(It would be nice to have onboard air)

by:

Excellent customer service. Made sure my needs were met. Package arrived on time, and in good condition.
