Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Installation - 2001 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500

Today on this 2001 Dodge Ram eight foot bed 2500 series we are going to install gooseneck hitch part number 9460-39. We need to do a couple of things first to get ready to install this hitch. First off we need to lower the spare tire so we have room to work underneath. Second, the fender well has a plastic cover on the inside. We need to remove that so we can get room for the side brackets to install those into the frame. First we will take off the mud flap and then we will take out the fender liner. After you drill out these two rivets you are going to need a right angle drill. These rivets never seem to do too much work so they just pop right off. This will be reinstalled once we get done. Next we are going to lower our exhaust. We are going to just take these rubber hangers, spray them down with some lubricant, and slide them off and push them off to the side. Also to take note this is an after market exhaust, basically the hitch is designed for stock exhaust in figurations. 01:16

Alright, as you can see here, it has the rubber spring on the bottom half and then on the top part is a thin metal plate. And then on top of that is another rubber part that can actually get pushed into the bump stop cup that is located on the frame of the vehicle. What you need to do is lift the frame of the vehicle up to loosen the suspension up, so we have more working room. 0:32

2001 Dodge Ram Pickup Questions and Answers

  • How to Determine Which Transmission Line is the Return Line for Installing a Transmission Cooler
  • The method we use to determine the correct line to install a transmission cooler on is pretty simple. You want to install the cooler on the return line. To determine which line is the return line you will want to start with your truck totally cooled off. Start the truck and put it in drive, apply the brakes firmly and then apply the accelerator slightly so that the rpms climb. Put the truck back in park and shut it off. Now go out and feel the two lines leaving the radiator. The cooler...

  • Best Trailer Tire in Size ST235/80R16
  • The best tire we have in the size ST235/80R16 that you referenced would be the # TTWTRTM2358016E. This radial tire is a Load Range E with a 3,520 lbs at 80 psi capacity and a speed rating of 81 miles per hour. Normally trailer tires are only rated for 65 MPH, but since this one is rated higher it would be the best option that we have since most people really want to at least do 70 MPH. I attached a review video for this tire for you to check out as well.

Please note that you should always have at least 5 psi in the springs up to 100 psi. When in its regular state the bags will not expand much beyond how they come in the box. They are 6 inches tall again not counting the valves. And finally, the diameter is 5-3/4 inches. Use these measurements as guides...

On the other side of the panel you will see 3 jumper settings. The jumper should be positioned in the right most location unless it has been changed before. You can move the jumper once to the left for level 2 or all the way to the left for level 1. I have included a link to the installation instructions....

The issue is that trailer tires are built with a thicker side wall to handle more vertical load. This thicker side wall also means that the tire can generate more heat. Higher speeds create even more heat. You will want to avoid doing anything that will increase the amount of heat the tire can potentially...
