How to Install the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit on a 2018 Grand Design Momentum 5W Toy Hauler- Video
Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we have a 2018 Grand Design Momentum Triple Axle Toy Hauler and we're gonna be taking a look at, and I'm gonna show you how to install the Hydrastar disc brake kit. This particular kit is designed to fit triple axle trailers and axles up to 7,000 pounds in capacity. And for this particular trailer, this has a GVWR of 20,000 pounds. That is a very, very heavy trailer being pulled behind a pickup truck. What I recommend is checking the sticker on the side of your camper, which is typically on the driver's side up by your leveling controls or checking the axle to see how much your camper weighs and how much each of your axle capacities are, in order to get the right kit. more

These assemblies are gonna be made in the USA, you'll see that nice proud sticker right there. They do feature a 12 inch diameter with a two inch width. The mounting flange bolts are gonna be a five bolt pattern, so that may be something you wanna double check on your axle before you select which option you're gonna go with there. These are for any wheels from 14 and a half inches all the way up to 16 inches. more

So with these big trailers and campers, you know, braking performance is usually pretty poor. A lot of times they'll come right from the factory with just kinda your classic, you know, electric drum brakes, which, you know, they definitely help, they work, but there's a lot of room for improvement and that's where something like this would come into play. So we've converted this to a disc brake setup, which is electric over hydraulic. So very similar braking performance to almost, you know, your passenger trucks and things like that. more

From the factory, your Momentum is going to come with your traditional-style drum brakes. And when you get into a camper of this size or a trailer of this size, the drum brakes really are not. They're not gonna work very well because when drum brakes get very hot, they don't like to work properly, that's where our disc brakes come in. They're gonna stay cooler, they're gonna provide better braking, and ultimately give you more comfort when you're traveling down the road. more

Hydrastar Brake Kit Installation - 2017 Grand Design Momentum 5W Toy Hauler- Video
Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the Hydrastar disc brake kit for triple axles. Now one of the biggest issues, which you may already know if you're watching this video, is that big RV's like this one weighing in at 16,500 pounds dry, that's before any fuel in the fuel tank, any water in the tanks, anything inside of it, this one is a toy hauler, the normal electric brakes, the drum brakes, are not really adequate for stopping this size of a vehicle. This vehicle itself has a GVWR of 21,000 pounds, so that's a lot of weight. The disc brakes are going to perform way better than your standard drum brakes. A drum brakes, the biggest problem with them is that they get really hot, and they do not like to cool down because they're all contained inside the drum. more

Checking Out the Demco Hydraulic Brake Kit- Video

Now these are galvanized marine grade hydraulic drum brake assemblies, great for boat trailers, and they are designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. They offer sturdy, corrosion resistant steel construction. As we've mentioned, they have the galvanized backing plate, does use the stainless steel spring hardware and in a zinc plated wheel cylinder. So all those features help when it's used in a marine application. more

Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and I'm gonna show you how to install the DeeMaxx Disc Brakes on our 2015 JAYCO Pinnacle Fifth Wheel Trailer. Now, the biggest reason why you would wanna swap over to a set of disc brakes, rather than your standard drum brakes, on a rig like we have here is because you need a little bit more stopping power. Drum brakes do an okay job of bringing your camper and your truck to a full stop. But as you'll see later on in this video it takes much longer, because the drum brakes is such an old style of applying the brakes in a trailer. Disc brakes are going to provide a much more sound stop. more

Now, this trailer disc brake kit will include the two assemblies with the rustproof stainless steel rotors, calipers, and mounting brackets. Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this DMAX hub and rotor disc brake kit. This kit is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes, so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your vehicle. Now this set is going to feature two of these brake assemblies, so having the two of them will allow you to upgrade a single 3,500 pound capacity axle. We do have these half-inch diameter wheel bolts that are pre-installed in the five on four and a half inch bolt pattern. Our hubs and rotors, as well as our mounting brackets, all have a max coat finish, so that's gonna help resist against rust and corrosion. more

Today I'm gonna take a look at the Dexter 12 inch by 2 inch corrosion-resistant left hand and right hand free backing hydraulic drum break assemblies with the parking brake, and these are for a 7,000 pound axle. Now, these hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with a surge type trailer brake actuator. These we mentioned are a free backing design, and the free backing design lets you reverse without the trailer brakes being activated. And they do that because the hydraulic pressure is contained by the wheel cylinder and the brake shoe turns and releases pressure when it's reversing. more

Now this kit is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can take advantage of the superior performance that comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Now, having the two brake assemblies here is going to allow you to upgrade a single 7,000 pound capacity axle. Our rotors do measure 13 and 1/8th of an inch in diameter. And you can see, we've got the 1/2" diameter wheel bolts here and the eight on 6 1/2" bolt pattern. more

Now, this kit is gonna feature two of these slip-on over the hub rotors that will fit over your standard idler hubs, will allow you to upgrade your trailer from an idler axle to a braking axle so that your trailer can slow and stop itself rather than relying on your tow vehicles brakes to slow and stop, both, so it's definitely gonna take some of that strain off your tow vehicle. These are also going to have a max coat on them that's gonna provide rust protection. The max coat finish on our rotors as well as our calipers and our brackets. It's going to have a Salt Spray rating of over 1000 hours. more

Now, this kit is gonna feature two brake assemblies that are the slip-on, over-the-hub design, so it's going to fit right over your standard idler hubs, and this is gonna allow you to upgrade your trailer from an idler axle to a braking axle, so that your trailer can slow and stop itself rather than relying on the brakes of your tow vehicle to slow and stop both, so it's definitely gonna take some of that strain off your tow vehicle. These are a DeeMaxx brand, so they are going to be very high quality, DeeMaxx is very focused on being top of the line as far as quality goes. And our rotors as well as our mounting brackets do have a Maxx coating on them, so that's gonna help resist rust and corrosion. That Maxx coating is kind of a proprietary coating that's comparable to like a chromate finish, so that is going to have an over 1,000 hour salt spray rating. more
