Today on our 2021 Grand Design Solitude Fifth Wheel, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Dexter DX Series brake actuator for campers that have electric over hydraulic disc brakes. But before we get into that, let's take a minute, we'll check this out and make sure this is going to work for you. What this is going to help you accomplish or where it's gonna come into play is for those of you that are wanting to convert your camper's braking system to a disc brake kit, hydraulic disc brake kit, because the majority of the trailers out there are gonna come out of the factory with your standard electric drum brakes, right Which work, but they're subpar, especially on big campers like this, right So by upgrading to electric over hydraulic disc brakes, it makes a huge difference. It'll reduce your topping distance usually by about half, if not more sometimes, depending on the brake kit that you get. So with this, how it's gonna work is it's going to receive input from your truck's brake controller. more

The series that we're working with today is going to be the G-1600 Alpha. If you need a higher flow rating or if you have a triple-axle trailer, that's a good reason to need more flow, that is gonna be the G-1600 X Alpha. The unit itself is going to have a very small construction comparative to a lot of the other accessories on an RV. You can mount it up pretty well anywhere you've got an open footprint of about 6 by 12 inches. more

Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. So with a surge brake system, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once the tow vehicle starts to slow down. And when this happens, this inner slide portion of the actuator will actually contract back into the outer case here and it applies force to the master cylinder in the back here. more
