Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Speaker 1: Today in our 2017 Chevrolet Colorado, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller for one to three axles, part number TK90160. So here's where our Primus IQ looks like when it's fully installed. Now it is a proportional brake controller, which means it's gonna apply our trailer brakes in the same intensity and at the same time that we apply the brakes in our vehicle. Now what our trailer brake controller is going to do is it's going to take the signal from our brake pedal, so when we press on it, it's gonna take that signal, following the wires, and it's gonna send it out to 7-way at the back, and it's gonna send the proper signal from the back of our 7-way to our trailer to our brakes and have the proper signal, and the right adjustments of everything. Now the CR brake controller is going to let us know that the brake controller senses that the trailer is connected so just a quick glance down, we can know if we're connected properly or if there's any issues at the back. The button on top here is going to be for our boost setting, and we're gonna have three different boost settings. It's gonna be off, one, two, and three. more

Today on our 2005 Chevy Colorado, we'll be installing the Takonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller, part number TK90160. With this brake controller, we will be using the universal 7-pin wiring kit, part number ETBC7. We'll start at the rear of the vehicle. On this particular vehicle, there was already a 4-way trailer connector installed. We will begin by finding a location to mount he 7-way and 4-way trailer connector. On this particular, we we're able to mount the bracket just under the bumper edge. To mount the 7- and 4-way trailer connector bracket to the bumper, we used 2 self-tapping screws. To make things easier, we will go ahead and make some of our wire connections on the table before we install the 7- and 4-way trailer connector up on the vehicle. more

Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2019 Chevrolet Equinox

Shane: Hi, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today you're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to walk you through the installation on the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller on your 2019 Chevrolet Equinox with the Factory Tow Package. Most of the time when we think about a brake controller, it's on a larger vehicle, or on a big truck that may be pulling big trailers. On a smaller SUV like this, maybe you have a boat trailer that has brakes on it, or maybe you have a camper, a small camper that has brakes on it. Maybe you're going on a camping trip and you want to make more room for your passengers inside, so you want to put all your gear into a trailer and that trailer has brakes on it.You've pulled each of these things and without a brake controller you have felt the trailer as you're coming up to a stop pushing on the car. It's an uncomfortable feeling when you're coming up to the back of another car that's already stopped and it doesn't feel like your car is stopping. Adding a brake controller to the vehicle is not only going to make your driving experience much better, but it's going to make your passengers much more comfortable during the ride. The trailer brake controller is going to be a proportional brake controller, so when you apply the brakes in the vehicle it's going to apply the same amount of pressure in the trailer depending on how you have it set, whether that applies the brakes a little bit sooner or a little bit later. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Speaker: Today, in this 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller, part number TK90160, in conjunction with the etrailer.com Electric Trailer Brake Controller Installation Kit, part number ETBC7, and the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit for Chevrolet Equinoxes, part number RM-751429.Here's what our brake controller looks like installed. Now, the reason you're going to want a brake controller on your Equinox is, if you're planning on towing a trailer that has electric brakes, you're going to need a way to operate them, and this brake controller will allow you to do that. Now, what sets this brake controller apart from other ones on the market is how simple and easy to operate it is. It's a very high quality brake controller but is lacking some of the other features that you may not ever even need to use. So that makes it a very cost-effective solution. Now, when you're comparing this to, say, the Prodigy P2 brake controller, this brake controller doesn't allow you to use electric over hydraulic brakes. The Prodigy P2 does. That's really the only difference between the two. This one will allow you to control up to three axles and trailer brakes. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2016 Chevrolet Express Van

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Express we're gonna be installing the Tekonsha Primus trailer brake controller, part number TK90160. The Primus is gonna provide all of your necessary features for your entry level brake controller system. This is gonna more stripped down compared to some of your other models, it's only gonna have your primary functions that's necessary. It's got a digital display versus other models that may have an LCD however this one will still be able to provide you with diagnostic features as well as displaying voltage to your trailer during braking. It provides a proportional braking system so the harder you brake the harder your trailer brakes will brake. This also works with the momentum of the vehicle so as it detects more momentum it does apply harder brakes in the back to stop your trailer at the same rate as your vehicle. There's no level adjustment required unlike some other models that may require you to drive the vehicle and set your level adjustment before the proportional braking will work properly. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2010 Chevrolet Express Van

Speaker 1: Today in this 2010 Chevrolet Express Van we will be having a look at, and showing you how to install the Tekonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller part number TK90160.To ease your install we'll be using universal seven way trailer brake controller kit, part number ETBC7.Here's what our brake controller looks like installed. Now what's great about this brake controller, is that this is a proportional brake controller, which allows us to slow down smoothly, and safely when we're towing a trailer, and our brakes are being applied instantly versus with a timed delay brake controller, it's also not gonna give you a jerky ride like a time delayed brake controller would. Now the reason you're gonna want a brake controller such as this one is if you're towing a trailer that has electric brakes, you won't be able to control them without having a brake controller. Now what sets this brake controller apart from other proportional units on the market is not only is this a very high quality unit, but it's also a very simple one to use without a lot of overly complex features. This gives you the basic functions that you need in order to safely, and easily utilize trailer brakes. To our right we have our manual override, and what this does, this will apply our trailer brakes to the maximum level that we have set the further we press it in.The reason you want a manual override is because if your trailer starts to sway behind you, or starts to jackknife, you would want to slow the trailer down, not your vehicle, that'll make things worse. So by applying this, only the brakes on the trailer will be applied without you applying your vehicle's brakes.Over here to the left this is our gain adjustment knob. This knob here controls how much power is being sent to your trailer brakes. Right now if it's set all the way up you see our display reads at 11, and we start to roll it back it'll start to drop back down all the way down to zero, which means no trailer brakes being applied.General rule of thumb, you want to start it somewhere in the middle, so about five and a half will be ideal. more

On our brake controller, we get a short pigtail and it has four different color wires: a black, a red, a white and a blue. We'll go ahead and connect them using some butt connectors, so we'll be tying the blue wire off of our connector that goes in the back of the brake controller to the large blue wire on our factory wiring harness. The black wire off of our brake controller will tie in with the red wire with the white stripe off of our factory wiring harness. more

Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2010 Chevrolet Traverse

Today, on our 2010 Chevy Traverse, we'll be installing the Tekonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller for 1 to 3 axles, part number TK90160. The additional items we'll be using to complete the brake package hookup will ring terminals, part number 44-5356A. We'll also be using a total of approximately 35 feet of the jacketed 2 wire, in 12 gauge. It's part number 12-2-1. We'll also be using 2 breakers on the installation. We'll be using 1 inline 20 amp breaker, which is part number 9506P, and one 40 amp inline circuit breaker, which is part number 9510. Now, because this vehicle has already had an ETBC7 started on it, we're just going to need to do a little bit of clean up work. The purple wire will not be used, and we will just take that up out of the way, and we will take part of our duplex wire, which is a white and a black wire, and we will connect the black wire to the black wire here, using a butt connector. We will also go ahead and connect the white wire to the blue wire. Again, we'll go ahead and use a butt connector to make this connection. Now, once we have this connection made, we're going to go ahead and clean up the wiring back here by using some zip ties, and electrical tape. Now, we're going to need to go ahead and route the gray duplex wire to the front of the vehicle. You want to make sure you stay away from any moving parts, areas that are sharp, or may become hot. We're going to need to find a grommet or something to poke into the cab of the vehicle. Now, this grommet, when you go from the inside of the vehicle, is actually to the right side of the gas pedal. Now, when you push the white wire in through the grommet, we'll go ahead then and push the additional white and black wire, but we're going to leave it in the gray sheathing for now. Next, we'll need to fish a second duplex wire, along with the left over black wire from the original duplex wire, into the engine compartment under the hood. Underneath the pedals here, there's a kick panel, or a plastic covering, that will need to be removed. There are 3 push fasteners that will need to be removed in order for this panel to come down. A flat head screwdriver, or a trim panel removal tool, works great to get these out. The first duplex cable that we routed into the cab with the white wire will get wired to our brake controller. Now, for the red wire, we are going to use the factory tow section, and we will find which wire is only hot when the brake pedal is pressed in. As you can see here, using our test light, we find that the white wire is essentially the brake switch wire. more

This one, we don't currently have it connected to a trailer so if we hit the manual override, you'll see it shows NC for no connection, but when connected it'll show you the power output that it's putting through to a trailer. Here on the side we've got this turn dial to adjust your gain level for the amount of power being sent back to the brakes on your trailer. Here on the top we've got this blue button and that's going to let you go through to your three boost levels so that you can adjust the amount of boost that's going to go back to the trailer brakes. This brake controller is nice and easy to use and it's going to do a great job of providing proportional braking power to the brakes on your trailer and it does that by the inertia sensor that it has inside. You're able to mount it from zero degrees all the way up to 90 degrees in the vertical plane. What I like most about this brake controller is how easy it is to use and operate because it's as simple as setting it and if you want to set a boost level, you can do that. more
