How to Install a Wiring Harness for a Trailer on a 2008 Ford Taurus X

Today on this 2008 Ford Taurus X, we will be installing wiring harness part number 118448. We are inside the rear hatch of the Taurus. The connection points for our harness are going to be both on the drivers and passengers sides. Directly behind these panels. So we will start by removing this piece first. As you can see here at the bottom, we have got two push pin connectors here that we will need to remove first. We can kind of flip up the cargo hooks here. We should be able to gently rock this back and forth and we are going to try to release these clips here on the top side. It pops right off there. We also need to remove from each interior panel the two tie down hooks here for our cargo net. So we just want to get in there, and we can use a flathead screwdriver or pry tool and pry that back and you will hear the clips release.

And we can just get in here enough to access the connection point if I pull the panel back. It is right there, just behind the panel and that is going to be the same on the driver side as well. There is a little tab here at the bottom holding the two connectors together, you want to push that in and pull straight down. That will allow the two pieces to disconnect from each other. Over here on the passenger side, the connector we are going to be using is the one with the green wire. And we are simply going to plug this in line for the two pieces that we just disconnected. And we can reassemble here the passenger side. And then next, we are going to go over here to the driver side and do the same thing. Plug the connector with the yellow and brown wires in over here on the driver side.

You will also note that we have got a white wire here with a ring terminal on it. That is going to be our ground wire. We are going to be needing the self tapping screw, which is provided with our wiring harness installation kit, to secure this to a grounding point here on the interior side of the vehicle. And since it is such a tight fit behind the interior panel, just go ahead and pull some of the wire back here and we can actually ground the ground wire here down towards the bottom panel where it is a little bit easier to get to. So I am going to go ahead and make my connection first and then we will go down and ground the wire. I think what I am actually going to do is go ahead and pull some of the carpeting back here so we can gain access to the side of the trunk well here. And I think we will go ahead and ground right there. And you can see, with our carpeting reinstalled now, our ground stud is hidden.

The only remaining piece here is our 4-pole connector. That is actually going to stay here in the cargo area. You can see we have got some excess wire here. I am just going to go ahead and tuck that up behind the passenger side panel to where it is basically coming across in a straight line. And that will keep it from getting caught up when we go to reconnect the threshold piece here. And now that we have got the interior reassembled, I just want to give you a quick overview of the harness. And when we want to go ahead and use it, you can simply take it and remove it out of the cargo area here. The weather stripping here will keep it from getting pinched so you do not have to worry about closing the door on it. We will just make our connection to our trailer. And then, again store it inside the cargo area when not in use. And with that, that will conclude our installation of wiring harness part number 118448 on a 2008 Ford Taurus X.
