How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria

Today on this 2003 Ford Crown Victoria we are going to be installing wiring harness part number 119178KIT. We are in the trunk of the Crown Victoria and we want to locate the wires that we are going to need to tap into to power our wiring harness . We can actually access all of the wires over on the driver side of the vehicle behind the carpeting just behind the tail light assembly. To gain access to it we are going to need to remove a few pieces. There are a couple of fasteners holding the carpeting in place. There is one large one right here and then one smaller one here. For a little more clearance room I am going to remove this push pin here as well. To get a little more room I am going to remove the rear threshold cover and we have got four push pins holding it in place. Then we just pull the carpeting back. 00:57

You can see the main lead of wire coming from the front that has got the loom over it and that is going to be the wires that we are going to be tapping our harness into. We want to cut back some of the tape. What we want to do now is take our circuit tester and figure out which wire provides each function we are looking for. We are going to first check for the left turn signal. It looks to be the green wire with the orange stripe. Next we want to check for the right turn signal and that is going to be the orange wire with the blue stripe. Next the running lights and that looks to be the brown wire. We also want to check for the brakes as well. The brake signal is actually fed onto the turn signal wires as well. 01:40

What we are going to do using a converter box is we are using the converter box for the circuit protection that it provides. On the converter box the wires are separated but on the vehicle they are together already. We are going to tap the wires in normally and take the red wire which is normally our brake feed and ground it along with the white wire. I am going to start making connections now. I am going to start with the left turn wire on our converter box which is the yellow wire and again on the vehicle that was the green wire with the orange stripe. We are going to make our connections using the quick splices that are provided with the kit. To use the quick splice we simply want to take the wire that we are connecting to and slide the quick splice over that wire to where it seats onto the outer set of holes there. Take the other wire and into the inside hole. Then just take a pair of pliers and crimp down on this metal tab at the top and just take the cover and clip it over the top and that makes our connection for us. 02:42

Next we are going to do the right turn signal which is the orange wire with the blue stripe. On our converter box that is the green wire and finally we will connect the running light lead. That is the brown wire on our converter box. It is also the brown wire on the vehicle. Again with the two left over wires, the red and the white, we are going to ground both of those. There is a nice metal facing right here that we can ground those wires to. What we need to do is add a ring terminal to the red wire. The last step is to mount the converter box so you can see here on the back side we have got some double sided tape and we just want to adhere that to the interior side of the vehicle. It is a good idea to clean the area that you are going to be adhering to before we apply the tape. Finally we just want to tape up our connections that we have made and then start reinstalling the interior. With the interior reinstalled we can just kind of show you how to use the unit. Obviously it is going to be coming out of the trunk and you do not have to worry about it being pinched. The weather stripping will prevent that from happening. Then when you are not using it you just want to leave it stored inside the trunk area. With that, that will conclude the installation of wiring harness part number 119178KIT on a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria.

I have confirmed with my contacts at Cequent and both the # 119179KIT and # 119178KIT will work with your 2003 Ford Crown Victoria. However due to the upgraded modulite protection offered in the # 119179KIT is recommended kit for use in your vehicle. The # 119178KIT offers a taillight converter, but the modulite offered in the # 119179KIT provides additional protection to the vehicle wiring, and does not allow shorts to back feed from the trailer to the vehicle wiring.
