Review of the Yakima Ski and Snowboard Racks on a 2017 Toyota Highlander

Hi everyone, Aiden here with etrailer.com, and today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima FreshTrack Ski and Snowboard Carrier here on our 2017 Toyota Highlander. Now, this style of carrier is going to hold it on your roof and in between these two arms with these very thick rubber pads. Those rubber pads are going to keep things nice and well gripped as well as cushioned and protected, so all of our gear's gonna be nice and safe up there, it's gonna hold it really well going down the road, and overall, be a great way of carrying that kind of long gear that might otherwise be hard to put in the car. Now, one thing I really like about this Yakima one is the very large buttons. This makes it really easy to open up, especially if you've got something like mittens on, you just hit it with the palm of your hand, and it goes up like that. They're spring loaded, so they stay open, and I can just grab my gear, take it off the rack, and set it aside.

And on that very large button, you can see that you've got a lock core, so when everything's in here, you can lock it up, it's gonna be nice and safe. The one complaint I have about the locking system is that there isn't a great way to lock the clamp to your roof rack. You can see, we've got these tool-free hand knobs that we can loosen up and open the clamps, but the way that they have those secured is this little set screw here, you'd run that down with a tool, and it kinda pins that hand knob in place. I'd prefer a lock core, I'd feel a little bit safer with that, because I think over time, turning this, if you forget the tool, that's gonna be a big pain, and then also, that plastic could wear down pretty easily then rendering it kind of useless. So for me, I'd prefer something a little more secure, the Inno Gravity, I like the way that works where you just clamp it down, lock it, and this actually locks the clamp as well, it's all in one system, so it's really easy to do.

As far as this one goes, you've got a lot of usable space in here. From the inside edge to the other inside edge, we've got 18 3/4 of an inch of actual usable space to fit our gear, so we can fit a lot in there. I'd recommend taking all of your skis, snowboards, whatever you're gonna carry, laying it out at home, taking a measurement, and seeing what you think will fit before you pick up one for yourself. You can always get these in different sizes, so if you need something with larger capacity, you can get that. As far as height added goes, from the top of our crossbar to the top of the carrier, we're gonna be adding six inches.

Now, that's not too bad, it's pretty low profile, especially when you compare it to an alternative option, which is a roof top box. I know a lot of people do like to carry their skis and snowboards in a box, it's nice, 'cause it's enclosed, but they're very bulky, they're gonna add a lot more height to your vehicle, they're gonna be harder to store when it's not on your vehicle, and generally, they're gonna be way more expensive. I like this option, because it's way more accessible, it's gonna be easier to use in my opinion, and easier to store when it's not in the winter season. I think overall though, it's gonna be a really great fit for the Highlander here, it's gonna do a good job of carrying your gear to the slopes when you need it. Thanks for watching..
