Review of the Yakima Roof Rack on a 2017 Volkswagen Golf

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Volkswagen Golf, we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima jet stream roof rack system. This is consisting of part numbers Y00425, these are the jet stream cross bars, 50 inches long; part number Y00146, these are the baseline towers for naked roofs; and finally part number Y06123 and Y06125. These are the base clip fit kits for this specific vehicle, and this is what's gonna be attaching to the door frame of your vehicle. The jet stream roof rack system is a great system to help you carry a wide variety of accessories in your roof while freeing up space inside your Golf. This has a nice aerodynamic shape to it, and that coupled with the rubber strip at the top, that's actually gonna help cut down wind noise and drag while you drive. Also, removing our end cap here, you can see that you can utilize T-track accessories with this as well. And what sets this apart from the other roof rack systems is instead of having to remove this strip and cutting it to length once you put the accessories in place, you simply push down the strip and slide the T-track accessories in, making it much easier. Also, moving down to our tower here, we do have this nice end cap here which can be removed; however, there is a spot here for this plastic piece here to be removed and replaced with the Yakima SKS lock cores, which are sold separately, so you can secure this to your roof once you're installing it.

Also, you can make it key to like with the accessories you're hauling as well. It's a very easy operation. Comes with the tightening tool and everything needed to attach it to your roof rack system, and it is padded where it makes contact with your vehicle as well. So let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We have our rear bar partially assembled on our table here, and we have everything that's gonna come with the kit once you have it. So our first step is we're gonna take our tower and get it prepped to be put on the other end of our jet stream.

Normally there would be a rubber strip on the underside here, but we went ahead and removed that. Once you have this installed, you can cut it to length so it takes up this gap here and so it won't make any noise while you travel as well.So we'll start by taking our plastic piece here and pushing it into place. Then we'll take our silver piece here, pull out this gray tab, line it up with the square at the top, then take our tightening tool. There we go. And just loosely tighten it up.

Not all the way, because this whole portion here is gonna slide into this channel. There we go. Now you see that we have these numbers here on the base. This is where your installation instructions come into play. That's exactly where it's supposed to be sitting.

So we'll match it up to wherever the instructions say, and then we'll make sure that our tow and our pitch are set at the proper point, and that's these two points underneath. So we want them at the middle on both, like so. You can see these notches, and you'll find this in your instructions as well. And you tighten this down until you hear a couple of audible clicks from our tightening tool here, like so. Usually wait till about two.Okay. Now we don't have to worry about the cross bar overhang once we have this installed. Next we'll take our pad from our fit kit and that just clips into place at the base here, like so. And then our final step, we're gonna install our clamps here. I'm actually gonna wait until we get this on the roof. Put our end cap in place, and then we can open up the rear doors of our Golf and start installing it.Set it gently on the roof. And then again, you go to your instructions and it'll give you a measurement from center to center of the bar. How we got our first bar in place, though, I would like to point this out, we measured from the edge of our window here or our windshield back to the front edge here. You can utilize any measuring tool you have. We're gonna go ahead and use a flat tape here. It's a little easier for us. Center to center. All right. Now we can start attaching our clamps. Before we do, you wanna go to this screw at the top here. You unscrew that. Turn it to the left, and this portion here is gonna raise up. This is so when we put our clamp in place here, that it's not gonna make contact necessarily with our vehicle. Loosen that up as well. There we go. You just kinda push that up and boom, you're done. We'll do this on the other side as well. Then you're ready to tighten it down. That's when the clamp goes around our doorframe. See how it goes down there Good. Now we'll go to the center screw and just start loosely tightening it up on both sides, trying to do it a little bit evenly. And again, you wanna do this until you hear those audible clicks from our tightening tool. We can close our gray door on the outside, also known as our car door. There we go. And our final step is we can take our end caps here, snap those into place, and then we're ready to load up our gear and hit the road. The last thing I would like to give you is a couple measurements here, and that's gonna give you an idea of how high this sits off the roof of your vehicle. From the center of the roof to the bottom of the bar is gonna be about four inches. From the center to the top, it's about 5 1/4 inches. So that's more than enough space for those accessories that wrap around your bars as opposed to going into the T-track accessories where they won't make contact with your roof. Also, you shouldn't have a problem with using your sun roof on this vehicle, and the two bars have a combined carrying capacity of 165 pounds, but you also wanna double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can take those weights. And there you have it for the Yakima jet stream roof rack system on our 2017 Volkswagen Golf.
