Review of the Thule Roof Box on a 2021 Toyota 4Runner

Hi everyone, Aiden here with etrailer.com, and today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Thule Force XT XXL Rooftop Cargo Box here on our 2021 Toyota 4Runner. Now, as you can see, this box is large. It's got 22 cubic feet of space on the inside, making it one of the largest boxes we offer. It's gonna be great for extra cargo on those long trips. I see a lot of people using this for their skis and snowboards, because of how long it is, and getting that extra luggage in here when you might not otherwise be able to fit it in your vehicle. The 4Runner is a large car, but if you've got that third row folded up, you're sacrificing a lot of cargo space, and this is gonna help get you that back.

Now, as far as how it operates, you've got opening on both sides, we've got it just set up on this side right now, but if we needed to, we could go to the driver's side and open it there. With the key in, we can turn the knob right there, and that will open up the lid. Now, I will say, it's a little hard to push all the way open from the bottom here, this is a taller vehicle, but once it's open, it stays open pretty well. We've got our hiking bag in here and a pair of skis. Now, the skis have plenty of room to spare, there's probably a foot and a half of free space behind them, and overall, we've got 85 1/2 inches of length to work with internally, that's a lot.

We've got 31 inches of width and 16 3/4 inches of height. Again, that's a lot of internal space. Check out your gear, measure it out, see if it's gonna fit, but I have a feeling, with this box, you're not gonna have any problems with storage space. Now, we do have this nice handle here to pull it back down from the ground, so if we need to, from the ground, you can reach that and close it up. And while I'm up there and I've got it open, I do wanna check out the clamp system, because that's something that really makes this nice, it makes it really easy to attach.

It's just a simple hand knob system, I can remove it real quick for you here. So these will drop down into the box, and spinning that knob will tighten them up around the bar, so it makes it really easy to attach. It does slide back and forth in a track, so you can adjust it a bit to get the right fitment for your 4Runner. Now, speaking of fitment, I do wanna point out the hatch clearance. So I'll just go ahead and close this up right now, and then once it's closed, we can lock it.

Now, with it like this, like I mentioned, those clamps can slide back and forth on the box, so we've got it as far forward as it can go, but our roof rack is somewhat centered here, and with the roof rack centered like that, the hatch, unfortunately, isn't going to clear. Now, we've got some free space where we can move the whole roof rack up a bit, and we might be able to get some extra clearance. This is a large tailgate though, and I have a feeling you might not still be able to open it all the way. Luckily, we do have the large back glass on the 4Runner, so we do have an easy way to get into the back if we need it, but that's just something to keep in mind. And overall, I really like this box, I like how big it is, I like how it looks on the 4Runner, and I think it's gonna hold up really well on all your adventures. Thanks for watching..
