Review of the Thule Ladder Racks on a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic

Today on our 2019 Ram 1500 Classic, we're going to be doing a test fit on the Thule Xsporter Pro Adjustable Height Truck Bed Ladder Rack, which is part number TH500XT. This also does come in black under part number TH500XTB.This ladder rack is a great tool to have that'll allow you to haul any longer items above the bed of your pickup, and freeing up space inside the bed for other tools or other items or equipment. It's also going to help prevent you from having to travel with your tailgate down, which we all know that could sometimes be a hassle or could be more of a struggle or more of a risk, I should say.The rack itself has an adjustable height. How you would do that, if you're going to do it by yourself, I would suggest being in the truck bed and in the middle. What you would do is you would come and loosen both of these hand knobs right here. Once you get both sides, you can adjust it to whatever height you desire, whether you want it lower, like more towards the height of your cab, or if you want it a lot higher than your cab, you can do that as well.

Once you've got it to your desired height, just tighten up those hand knobs again. Then, you'll be good to go.The ladder rack itself has a weight limit of 450 pounds, which isn't as much as some other ladder racks. The bonus of having this one is that, again, you have the adjustable height and it's easy to remove it unlike some of those permanent ones where they have a better weight limit. We also have some load stops on both of the ladders. You just have to loosen up the hand knob to adjust it.Now, we have a weather strip up top that's in the channel.

That helps with cutting down on wind noise and drag. What you would want to do is remove it like this. We'll set it to the side. Then, once you have the load stops to wherever you want them, then you would cut that strip to length. Then, you just stick it right back in there and that'll still cut down on that wind noise and drag from falling out of this channel. The bars themselves have a nice aerodynamic shape, if you see from the side, which is also going to help cut down on that wind noise and drag.

I'm going to go ahead and loosen up both of these load stops. Then, I'm going to go ahead inaudible 00:02:47 the ladder up here in a little bit and show you what it's like. First, I want to show you how it installs. Each ladder rack is going to be held in by four different clamps. We have the clamps right here, as you can see. First, I'm going to take this rubber pad and we're going to set it under the base of the ladder rack.

Now, it's going to help protect your truck bed rails from any type of damage from the ladder rack. We're going to grab our clamps. Then, we're going to take the little plate and set it on top of that screw. Then, we're going to come in here. We're going to come under. It's always a good idea to start on the side before you get over to the base. Then, we're going to slide it into that channel that's on top of the ladder rack. Then, we'll just hand tighten it. Frequently, you want to check up here and make sure that the plate that you put on isn't being obstructed by anything. Just make sure that has a clear path and it's going to make solid contact. We'll get the other clamp on as well. You can see right here, we have a lock that's going to go on our clamp. You're going to have two locks, you put one of each of the clamps that can hold the lock on the base of the ladder rack, so we have one on that base and we'll have one on this base. That's really a nice security measure, so that no one can take that clamp off, thus removing your ladder rack without the key. They are keyed alike.Once we have it hand tightened, we're going to grab our socket wrench, which has a 7/32nd Allen piece to it. We're going to tighten it down. We don't need it too tight. It's still going to do its job without having to make it super tight to where it's going to warp the truck bed cap. Just we'll get it a bit snug and that'll be good. We'll do the other one now. There we go. Give it a quick shake, make sure that it's stable. Then, we're going to grab the lock. You can tell which clamp . We have two clamps that have this little bracket right here and the lock fits over the bracket. Then, we lock it in place, take the key out. Now, we can't remove this clamp and that's, again, a really nice safety feature. Now, I'm going to grab the ladder, go ahead and toss it up there so you can get an idea of what it's going to look like. If you're doing this by yourself, whether you have a ladder or if you're maybe loading some lumber up for a job, it's best to start from the back and work your way down the ladder, like I am. Then, we're just going to push it up like so. Then, when you can make contact with the other side, you can set it down. Then, we'll push it however far we need it to go, just like that. We'll open up that. Now, what you want to do with the load stops, we'll push the outside against the load stops. We'll come on the inside. We'll loosen up these hand knobs right here. We're going to push it and apply it, kind of sandwich it between the two load stops. We'll do that on both sides. Now, keep in mind, these load stops aren't necessarily the only way you should secure it.You still want to get a set of straps. All this is going to do is make sure that it doesn't shift side to side. Your straps can primarily focus on strapping the ladder down onto the rack and prevent it from jumping up and down. If you don't have any straps or bungee cords, you could pick up a set of Thule Load Straps here at etrailer.com.Other than that, that's going to do it for our look at the Thule Xsporter Pro Adjustable Height Truck Bed Ladder Rack on our 2019 Ram 1500 Classic.
