Review of the Thule Hitch Bike Racks on a 2019 Nissan Armada

Hi guys, Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Thule Easy Fold XT bike rack on our 2019 Nissan Armada. So, as you can see, it is a pretty unique bike rack when it comes to platform style racks. It's got two different tie down points for your wheels and your wheel sits in these nice little wheel wells right there. On top of that, you have a very lockable and tight little frame mount right here. As you heard, when it clicks into place, that means it's torqued down to specs.

These do rotate around this back bar so you can get it situated however you want, and they do rotate in 360 degrees. Also on top of that, if you would like to lock this little knob just in case, basically it takes this wheel off the threads and allows you to protect your bike from any person who may want to steal it.So as you can tell, there's one frame contact right here, but the rest just goes down to your wheels and it is a ratchet strap type strap. So basically you fish it through there and you can torque it down just by cranking up on that little lever right there. Really cool feature about this, with the bike installed, you can step on this little tab right there, and it does allow you to tilt your bike with any bike on top, which allows you to access your hatch on your Armada with no clearance issues. You can grab your battery pack, you can grab your helmets, your lunch, whatever you need to go on your trail.A really extremely unique part about this easy fold rack, there is a little storing case right here behind and underneath this little ramp thing here.

It's an expandable ramp, which, when in the upright position and you're loading your bikes, you stick it in there and you can ramp your bikes all the way up to load them. As you can tell, it is kind of a steep incline on this Armada, because it does sit a little bit higher than most cars, but Thule does sell an extension for this to fix that. If you want to stow this back away, just go back here. Put this back where it needs to be.So I want to show you how easy it is to take this bike off the rack. I like to save this one for last, as it kind of holds this bike upright.

You don't want it falling on you. Click that pin in, twist it around, tuck it away. Now that it is locked, it's not going to be doing any loosening of any sort. So I want to take my key right here and stick it in there. It does have to be in the right orientation, about this angle, for that key to actually fit in there.

You might have to wiggle it around a little bit in the right spot. It's right there. That's the sweet spot. So now that it's unlocked, you can sit there and unscrew this, but be sure to put your hand on the bike, just in case. You don't want it falling on you. Fold that down, and then you can go ahead and remove your bike.So now what I can do is show you how it all condenses up. But before that I'm going to replace all my straps, just so they're not in the way. Just folds up like a suitcase, which is really cool. Another anti theft device that they put on here is another little knob, which basically, it secures this little arm into your hitch right here, and when it is unlocked you can turn it to tighten and loosen. What I mean by that is this little arm right here goes inside your hitch and expands to take out all that rattling and shake and play that you may have with other types of bike racks. Also, it has an integrated hitch pin hole finder, that basically finds that hitch pin hole as you put it into your hitch, which makes it for a very easy install. So let me do some measurements for you. You're going to be adding about 32 inches to the back of your Armada, and the closest point to your Armada is about eight and a half inches. What really sets this thing apart from before, like I said, it's kind of like a suitcase. I'm going to show you here real quick and all you got to do is you can loosen this real quick. Pull this hitch pin thing out. I'll show you what it can do. As you can see, there's a little bit of wheels right here, and you pull this little lever up like that and it pivots that hitch so then you can literally grab it and wheel it off like a little suitcase. Very, very unique to this bike rack and very cool feature. That's going to do it for our look at the Thule Easy Fold XT on our 2019 Nissan Armada. Here on our test course we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action. This simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, parking garage or driveway.
