Review of the Swagman Hitch Bike Racks on a 2015 Jeep Patriot

Today in our 2015 jeep patriot, we've got out the Swagman Trailhead. Now this is a full length style non tilting four bike rack. As you can see it's of the hanging style. This is been designed for use in two inch hitches and it is RV approved. Part number on it is S63381. Now the Trailhead is going to use four straps to hold our bike in place.

And it uses two triangular shape cradles. We've got two here on the frame and two - one here close to the back of the frame too and also one down here acting as a anti sway strap. Does a good job with keeping our bike from moving to far forward or back. And the straps themselves, I like the style of them I like the way they feel. They're flexible enough so we can release them fairly easily.

But they're also nice and sturdy. Nice and thick. Have a good feel. Stretch well. Just overall I like them. Now to release our straps as you can see we're just going to pull down and out and allow our straps to come up.

Lift our bike on off. Now inside of each cradle, we're going to have some small recesses of grooves in here. That's going to help any shifter cables or break cables have a spot to lay so they're not going to be smashed. Some cradles do have a deeper set. Keep that in mind if you've got really large cables.

Row a good rack. Good reviews on it too. As you can see our triangular shaped cradles, these are going to rotate for you so you can get the angle that's most closely going to match your bike on the back and in the front. Give us kind of a custom fit for them. And these will also slide in and out on the arm if you need more or less spacing for certain bikes. See what we're adding to the back of the vehicle here Looks like it's going to be about 29 inches total that we're adding. Now if we come up here to the top, there's actually going to be a pen and clip. There's a couple rubber bushings here. Really keep this connection point nice and quiet. We'll just pull that pen out pressed against those bushings slightly. Bring your pen out, cradle arms go down now, and then we'll reinsert the pen. There's going to be a new hole to pass that through here. And again, those rubber bumpers are going to make contact with that main mask keeping everything nice and quiet as we head down the rope. Now, folded up it's looks like we're only adding about 13 in a half inches to the back of the patriot so it'll be nice and compact. Our ground clearance here is going to be about 10 and 3 quarters of an inch. The closest point of the rack to the rear of the jeep is going to be about 2 in a quarter inches away here as you can see. Nice and stable, we won't ever have to worry about that rack exit going up and making contact with the vehicle. A lot of that has to do with the anti rattle bolt this is going to be provided with the rack. So you're just going to thread it in. As you tighten it down it draws the shank here right over against that receiver tube and that's going to minimize any movement here we might experience. As you can see, it does a great job. Now that we've had a good look at the Swagman Trailhead RV approved bike rack and we've seen how it's going to fit our 2015 Jeep Patriot, that's going to complete today's test fit.
